View Full Version : BARN FIND: Rarer than a 67 Yenko, slightly off topic al8apexer Nov 6th, 08, 11:26 AM hope that is ok, 1 of 6, presumed destroyed until last week: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110306170567 RSSSfanatic Nov 6th, 08, 11:47 AM Wow! Sounds like the guy has no idea what it really is, but from the looks of the bids, everyone else does. I love this quote: "THERE IS STUFF IN THE TRUNK (I PEEKED FROM BACK SEAT)LOOKS LIKE UNDERHOOD PARTS (HOPE IT'S NOT HOFFA)." GMJoe Nov 6th, 08, 02:08 PM Wow , I wish I had the other 5..... Rickdef17 Nov 6th, 08, 02:55 PM He probly bought it for 50 bucks cjm465 Nov 6th, 08, 02:58 PM here is a thread from Bench Racing with some vintage pics http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=145093 al8apexer Nov 6th, 08, 03:00 PM they got it when the owner died and it was left in a garage ... the property owner got it for "free" they were going to scrap it but the price of scrap was too low ... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=UBB1&Number=366692&Searchpage=1&Main=366692&Words=&topic=1&Search=true#Post366692 another discussion: http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578923 they actually HAD IT at the scrap yard, they wouldn't take it because he didn't have the/a title with him ... JimM Nov 6th, 08, 05:09 PM Wow. PowerWindows Nov 6th, 08, 07:29 PM Oh. My. God! Rare doesn't even begin to define this piece of history. JOE58 Nov 7th, 08, 05:33 AM the guy said he is listing the car for his brother-in-law I wonder if he is getting a flat fee to list it or a percentage of the sale ? :) very cool car. I think the 63 421 Tempest/Le Mans is the real "first musclecar". Although not made in high volume like the 64 GTO, it still fits the "smaller car with bigger engine" definition of a musclecar and came before the GTO. z10kl Nov 7th, 08, 05:40 AM It started out with a Buy it Now of $3000. I bet the lister and the brother In law have a falling out over the money. I also wonder if the storage bill only got behind after the owner died, and if his family know about the auction???? KevinK7 Nov 7th, 08, 06:12 AM Very very cool :) Lost in the 60's Nov 7th, 08, 06:20 AM It started out with a Buy it Now of $3000.:eek::eek: Can you imagine the people kicking themselves for not getting it for that price ??? I agree it has a cool history, but 74k AND RISING ??? No wonder I can't afford this "hobby"......... al8apexer Nov 7th, 08, 09:32 AM what would a Yenko Camaro in that condition be worth ... oh wait there was one just on ebay not as nice ... Lost in the 60's Nov 7th, 08, 10:29 AM what would a Yenko Camaro in that condition be worth ... oh wait there was one just on ebay not as nice ... I don't know which one you are referring to. I don't pay much attention to Yenko's either since they are overrated too...IMHO......:D Not that I wouldn't mind having a 427 Camaro, just that I wouldn't pay insane money to get it. There's too many other cool cars out there for FAR less that are just as fun to drive. mccorry Nov 7th, 08, 01:07 PM Very cool! 68 Ragtop Nov 7th, 08, 04:29 PM Wow, seller turned down a cash offer of $160,000 in the Q&A. So this car was obtained by way of an unpaid storage bill? The original owner knew what he had, but never told his heirs what to do with the car? Isn't Jay Leno in litigation for purchasing a car under similar circumstances? Attention old people with rare cars and parts squirred away: Tell your heirs where the stuff is and what it's worth. You will eventually die, possibly before you get around to doing anything with the stuff. jd502 Nov 7th, 08, 05:19 PM [quote=68 Ragtop;1099299]Wow, seller turned down a cash offer of $160,000 in the Q&A. He'll be sorry when the high bidder at 80k with ZERO feedback stiffs him!! al8apexer Nov 7th, 08, 05:42 PM I will bet this ends up in mid 6 figures ... Pro-Street69Camaro468 Nov 8th, 08, 04:15 AM Somebody had to bump there head to bid this high.Does goodmark have parts for this where would you find the parts to restore this heap... JOE58 Nov 8th, 08, 04:24 AM Some restored old drag cars like this have sold for $400K - $500K KevinK7 Nov 8th, 08, 06:31 AM ...another offer (over $160,000 this time...) "Q: I am thinking I would like to consider paying $500,000 would this end the auction.???? Answered on Nov-07-08 A: if you place a bid that high you should own it, but thanks for the offer " Wow!... I'm following this one to see where it ends. Should be interesting... DZ302 Chevy Nov 8th, 08, 08:18 AM WOW.... Rich and did not know it. Below is a genuine '63 Tempest with known drag history... Plan to restore someday. AHRA record holder in F1 SS.. also ran NHRA B/S with two 4 421SD or C/S with single 4. Have 421SD and very rare RamAir V Tunnel port motors also. Olds Posi rear, roll bar, Tach on Dash, Oil Pressure guage is what you see at the back of the hood. Halibrand rears with old M&H's, rusty old Crager fronts, aluminum spacers to raise the fronts with a genuine Craftsman 3/8" swivel to connect the steering..... One of the factory cars..... ???????? If you found a Camaro Shell with a 9" rear, could you call it the lost Dick Harrell drag car..... Is there any evidence that the car on EBay is a factory car.... Doesn't look like it with no aluminum front end, etc... Maybe only the VIN would trace the EBay Tempest back to an known car???? It turns out the car on EBay matches the factory VIN... Great Find Should we ask $500,000 ...$5 million? http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/oo219/Jack_Gesler/421SDTempest.jpg PS: One of the previous owners of this Green Tempest was Pete McCarthy here in Southern California...... It went to HO Racing, Texas, and then back to it's current Southern Calf. Home. I spent the last week with the origional owner/driver at SEMA this week.... There goes the Dream for $5 milllion.... It's a real Factory Car... I guess a non-factory car that raced NHRA in '63-64 may not be worth very much.... JOE58 Nov 8th, 08, 11:20 AM The 421 Tempest/Le Mans is what I would call one of the “ extreme” factory racecars. Detroit didn’t build many cars that went to such an extreme level to win drag races. It is extreme for two reasons. One is that it is a “factory lightweight” with special built alum parts and the other is the big engine and prototype 4-speed transaxle. This must have been an expensive project for Pontiac. Chevy did this with the 1963 Z-11 light weight drag car with special 427 W engine and special built alum parts. These were radical cars that were built to race and they couldn’t hide the racing parts as a “trailer towing package” or an “export option” as they did with some heavy-duty parts. Other “ extreme” factory racecars are the ZL1 Camaros, Hemi Dart and Barracuda, T-bolt Fords, other factory F/X cars, etc. musclegaragetv.com Nov 8th, 08, 08:17 PM That is almost an unbelievable story! aus67 Nov 9th, 08, 12:28 AM Awsome! what a piece of history I have never seen one before and to be saved from the crusher so close so lucky! jd502 Nov 9th, 08, 05:05 PM In one of the latest questions, someone asked if he was afraid of a new ebayer, bidding. His answer was NO ,JAY LENO is the current high bidder. 68RSZEE28 Nov 9th, 08, 09:03 PM WOOOOOWWWW !!!! Auction Ended @ $$ 226.421.63 !!!! azhunter Nov 9th, 08, 09:40 PM anyone know who the new owner is and where the car will be going for resto? z10kl Nov 10th, 08, 05:00 AM I wonder if he has thought of capitol gains?? 67 Plum Nov 10th, 08, 05:41 AM Wow! keypilot Nov 10th, 08, 08:01 AM did you see some of the other things the winner bought? wow. the economy is not hurting that guy. JOE58 Nov 10th, 08, 08:07 AM Ebay "gone wild" :) RSSSfanatic Nov 10th, 08, 08:11 AM I wonder if he has thought of capitol gains?? I would say there is no escaping the tax man on this deal. 15% of $226K is close to $40K - I guess he is lucky the new administration is not in office yet, or it might be more! I suppose sales tax will apply too. I wonder if they will try to hit him for back property tax too? It would suck to walk away from all this with only a few thousand dollars after all the taxes. I guess it's still better than a few hundred for scrap value! mrmuncie Nov 10th, 08, 09:43 AM X-Mass came early for the seller. WOW!!! Unreal Nov 10th, 08, 10:59 AM I wonder if he has thought of capitol gains?? Didn't the guy originally have a $3000 Buy it now? Maybe it's just me, bu I'd much rather pay 15% capital gains on $220K, than "sneak under the IRS radar" with a BIN of 3K. Unreal Nov 10th, 08, 11:06 AM I never picked up on how it was determined that this was a 63 SD. The owner obviously was unaware of what he had, so what clues can be seen in the pics that led to the discovery? 68 Ragtop Nov 10th, 08, 11:25 AM A lot of capital gains on classic car investments fly under the radar, but this one may just be to incredible to go unnoticed. I would also not be surprised if the rightful heirs hear out about it, and file a lawsuit to recover the money in excess of the storage bill lien. At least Leno is not involved in this one, he already has one lawsuit going. http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/10/16/2008-10-16_jay_leno_drove_sham_antique_car_deal_law-1.html 68 Ragtop Nov 10th, 08, 11:29 AM I never picked up on how it was determined that this was a 63 SD. That information is linked in the auction additional information section. (I have no 1st hand info to support this). The seller made a reference in the Q&A to Jay Leno having high feedback, so that may be where the rumor comes from. He also said he was going to retract all bids and bury the car on the Cadillac Ranch in Texas, so I think he may have just been having fun with some of the silly questions you get when you sell something on Ebay. dropit69 Nov 11th, 08, 09:46 AM there is a thread about this on the py forum..some guys on there know the buyer and said he has alot or rare stuff and this car will be redone right..just look at all the high dollar parts the guy has bought in the last month..glad to see it go into hands of someone like that.. JOE58 Nov 12th, 08, 07:35 AM 1963 was a wild year for GM racing activity and this car is part of that History They had the 421 Tempest/Le Mans, the Z11 Impala 427 lightweight, The 427 "mystery engine" NASCAR Impala, The 427 "mystery engine" Corvette, the Grand Sport Corvettes, the Chevy II/Nova road race fastback and other projects. They also had the 421 Tempest that ran Daytona and blew everyone away in a Stock Car race with the road race cars. They mention it in the ad. here is a picture of it running the high banks with AJ Foyt in a Z06 Corvette and a Mickey Thompson 427 "mystery engine" Corvette |
