View Full Version : Little piece of paper is worth a lot to me!
68camaroz28 Nov 8th, 08, 05:31 PM We purchased a 68Z28 approximately 26 years ago and even though it had the original motor, trans, rear, etc., I never knew much about the car except for it was thought the car was purchased new in the Rising Sun, MD area. Way back then we found an old charge slip from 1972 hidden under the seat between the carpet overlay. Not sure how it got there but sure glad it was. Back then we were not as driven to find out things as we are driven today :D
Anyway, I kept it more for a "lookie what I found" but never tried to do anymore with it. As some of you have read I recently found and called the owner of a 69Z28 that I have had the engine for just over 25 years. Since I was getting hot on the trail of finding that car I thought it was time to dig out that old charge slip and see what I could find out. Amazing what you can find with today's technology. For privacy sake I will use his first name only which was "Eddie." Well, I find two Eddies and immediately after talking to the person who has the 69Z28 which I have the engine I'm thinking since we are on a role it's time to see about a possible link to our 68Z28. Call is made and this Eddie answers the phone. After introducing myself I ask if he at one time owned a 68Z28 of which he replies "NO" and my heart starts to sink, but after a second hesitation, he adds, "but my father did." Now we're cooking! After explaining how I came up with his name (his name is the same as his father's) it's on to questions of was he the first owner of which he communicates I was just a baby and only remember my father talking about the car but offers and supplies me his father's telephone number in FL. I called there and talked to his wife but he was not available. She told me he loved that car! Fast forward to Saturday early evening and I try again and this time we are connected. He bought the car new in Charleston, WV at a dealership named (I hope I have this correct) Roger Dean Chevrolet. He thought it has a different name now. And then began giving me information which explained some small details like why the exhaust manifolds were not on the car as he had added headers. He also removed the 302 fender emblems and added the z28 emblems. So what a day the other day finding the owner of the 69 Z28 that I have the engine for and then backing that up with the original owner and information concerning our 68 Z28.
What a high ride
Here is a pic of the slip found back 25 years ago and notice the cost for the 9 plus gallons, $3.27.... Too bad it was not $3.02 :D Goes to show you sometimes a little piece of paper can be worth quite a lot sometimes. For privacy the persons name and old address is blocked out. I would appreciate if anyone has any info concerning the Roger Dean Chevrolet dealership in Charleston, WV or it current name, etc. Thanks in advance...

molaker Nov 8th, 08, 07:47 PM Cool story I also was able to get ahold of the original owner of my car. it's kind of neat to talked to them about your car,my guy ordered his [mine] when he was in vietnam and it was waiting for him when he got out.
Lost in the 60's Nov 8th, 08, 07:57 PM That IS really cool, and to imagine charging $3.27 for gas back then...... How unlikely was it to do that and to have the slip get pushed into the carpet seam.......stunning.....:hurray:
Is the owner of the car you have the engine for interested in getting it back.....
ChevyThunder Nov 8th, 08, 08:19 PM Very cool story.. I took the Z out today for a drive and was so happy to pay under 3 dollars a gallon for supreme ! :)
musclegaragetv.com Nov 8th, 08, 09:08 PM That is an awesome story!

I do believe so and would sure hope so! I will keep udating that one has things develop including pics of the car.
68camaroz28 Nov 9th, 08, 03:10 AM Completed some more research last night and found there was a Roger Dean Chevrolet in Charleston, WV that was sold in 1971 and became Tag Galyean Chevrolet which was sold again in 1987 but maintained the same name. Then it seems in the 90's the 4.1 acreas for the original car lot was purchased by the city and it is now an arts center.
Anyone live in the Charleston, WV area. Calling all cars, I mean calling all Camaro.net members-------
One thing I cannot believe I did not verify was the car when purchased had the air cowl plenum air cleaner opening cut in the cowl. The original owner told me he was interested in road racing (trans-am series? Mark Donahue) so I do need to verify this. So many 68 Z's have had the air cowl plenum added but were not original.
Stihl Nov 9th, 08, 06:06 PM I live about 20 minutes south of Charleston, WV. If memory serves me correctly, Tag sold and the dealership became Team Chevrolet. Team Chevrolet was then closed and the lot was sold to the city. It is now the Clay Center, a performing arts center. When I moved to the area it was already Team Chevrolet.

Anyone know if you can obtain info dating back to 68 from WV dept. of motor vehicles?
thanks in advance,
1968396 Nov 10th, 08, 09:44 AM If you dont mind me asking what service did you use to find the owner? I have a 68 SS and found a gas receipt from June of 69. The guys name is clear on the recept as well as the city and state it was purchased in, I tried a couple of online services but every report I got had several matches. I tried all of the ones with phone numbers with no luck but there are several names listed with no number. Just wondering if there is a better service than the one I used.
Thanks in advance,
Shane

Shane, I lucked out as the person's actual first name was Eddie which is somewhat unusual and there were only two matches in the state I was looking. My first phone call was to the son who directed me to his father who now resides in warmer weather. I used "switchboard, your digital directory" but they have another part of that website called "INTELIUS" that you can actually obtain unlisted phone numbers for a fee (credit card). Know what your thinking as it surprised me as well. If you need help with the website send me a PM. Happy hunting and good luck Shane.
angelglo Nov 10th, 08, 08:30 PM WOW. 0.359 cents a gallon. and its a cool story. i found an old charge slip in my chevelle. i wonder if i should try to locate the previous owner also.
Stihl Nov 10th, 08, 09:10 PM I have tried to get history and locate my first Camaro from the WV DMV without any luck. There is a form request you can fill out with the VIN number, and for a $5 fee the DMV will forward your request to the last registered owner of a vehicle, but it is up to the last owner to contact you at his option. The DMV will not give out any information to you due to privacy laws. I doubt their data base includes anything back to 1968 however.
Stihl Nov 10th, 08, 09:19 PM One more bit of trivia for you...Tag Galyean Jr. is an architect and designer living in the Lewisburg, WV area. He has designed items for the Greenbrier Resort and for several famous actors that have get away homes in that part of the state.
I also mentioned this post to a friend of mine who grew up around the Charleston area in the early 1970's. He said he remembered the Chevy guys and the Ford Guys razzing each other during street races/cruises. He said the while the Chevy guys always taunted " Ford..found on road dead", the Mustang guys taunted "Ford..F*** ol' Roger Dean" Just thought that was funny.
Stihl Nov 10th, 08, 09:57 PM Found out a few more things for ya. Roger Dean owned two dealerships, one in Charleston WV and one in Huntington WV. He was in zone 40 for both dealerships. The dealer number in Charleston was #135. The Chevrolet dealer number in Huntington was #273. In 1968 he sold the Huntington dealership to Dutch Miller. Dutch Miller Chevrolet still operates today and is ran by his son. Mr Miller is deceased.

With the age factor (we once kids are either close to or are senior citizens) get on that rascal today and let us know what you find out. If you need any help send me a PM. You just never know :D

Yea, more info:hurray: I will put that question on my list when I talk to the first owner again. In my first conversation he did however specify Charleston but this is good info.

Well since I have the car and now know of the first owner I guess I don't need the DMV!?!?!? Was hoping to see if I could obtain a copy of the first registration or anything. I sent an email to the WV DOT but guess what, no reply yet. Guess I better not hold my breath :noway:
firstgenaddict Nov 11th, 08, 11:20 AM The hole in the cowl was either cut by the dealership or by the first owner (a template was provided by Chevrolet). They were not done at the factory. I believe the cowl plenum A/C was shipped in the trunk...
gearheadtx Nov 11th, 08, 01:46 PM I also found the story very interesting and would like to find out more about my 67. what is the best way for a novice to get started on investigating the Pedigree and perhaps a copy of the build sheet or order sheet?

That is what I was always told and/or thought. My next conversation will be to know if he ordered the car, bought it off the lot, date of purchase (how did I forget to ask that), and if it came with the air cowl plenum or he purchased it. My guess is he purchased it as he told me he was really into the trans-am stuff, i.e. Donahue.

Not an easy question to answer at times. Build sheets are normally with the car somewhere, i.e. under back seat, top of gas tank, etc. What do you have (car) and what do you know today? I'm no expert but have done my share of digging. Believe me, there is as much luck as science or at least in my cases.
Good luck
Stihl Nov 11th, 08, 07:21 PM Chick, you have to email the WV Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The WV DOT is the Department of Highways (road maintenace, construction, etc). Let me know if I can help in any way.

Dang, that is one "good story" Paul. You are probably correct but what the heck, keep pluggin' till you can't. Thanks for sharing. Again, great story. Anybody else have a great story?
:beers:
ldrisner Nov 12th, 08, 06:19 PM The sad part about my car is the fact that I know it's history very thoroughly. The sad part is that having it 26 years and not having any documentation. Not a drop.
I ran into the Chevrolet Dealer Salesman who originally sold the car and he ask me if I still had it, to which I answered yes. He sold it to someone he knew and just by chance was able to keep up on who had it over the years.
Small Town type thing.
