View Full Version : BBC 427 help?
ssuper_nova_71 Jul 11th, 02, 10:43 AM I’m in the process of building a BBC 427. Though I am having some issues on choosing the right components. What I want is a street/ mostly strip car. High-octane gas is not a problem for me. The car should be weighing about 2800 to 3000 lbs, 400 turbo trans and
A ford 9-inch rear-end with 33 spline axels. I want to be realistic here and shoot for a low 11 to high 10’s. I figure I would be shifting around 6800 to 7000 rpms.
So that said, this is what I have collected so far. 454 block with 2bolt main caps. Forged steel 4340 eagle crank (3.76 stroke), eagle H beam rods stock length.
Where should I go from here? I want to use a mechanical lifter cam, and I will be using aluminum heads. I just don’t know there are so many parts out there. Can I get some advice???

cavemanmoron Jul 11th, 02, 10:54 AM my '67 rs weighs almost 3500 lbs with a spare/jack,a full tank of 93 octane Gasoline;
normal interionr,heater wipers etc,street driven;
with a 4 speed mincie and a 8.2 10 bolt with a posi,,
427 with stock cast heads,and edelbrock performer intake, hooker headers
why such a high rpm,you shouldn't have to go quite that high,i don't think,in my opinion,but i dont run those kinda times...
How much $$ will be your biggest speed factor..... http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif
good luck ! sounds like a good start !!
smits67 Jul 11th, 02, 10:59 AM I can not tell you how to build yours, but here are the major components for my 427.
.060 over bored block, 12.5:1 forged pistons, Weiand Team-G intake, hydraulic cam, roller rocker arms, H-beam rods, forged factory crank, and factory oval port heads.
I spent a lot of time on the cylinder heads, but that is not a factor since you are using aluminum heads.
Milan Jul 11th, 02, 11:00 AM I would suggest you buy a couple of Big Block build up books to help along with the process. Those numbers are very attainable even on a pump gas BB engine. Have fun ! large oval port heads big valves and and a cam in the upper 280- lower 290 duration area .550-600 lift range.

mls48341 Jul 11th, 02, 12:05 PM I use the trw L2308a piston, open chamber 781 oval port heads, a mechanical roller
in the .620-.650 lift range, and 1-7/8 or
2.0 primary tube headers.
4.10-4.56 gears and a 3500 stall.
You should be able to put a 3800 lb car well into the 11's with this combo on a 28-32" tire.
There are of course many veriables such as your chassis setup.

ssuper_nova_71 Jul 11th, 02, 12:10 PM well I think I have the chassis built ok.
Caltracks bars, mono leaf trick springs, subframe conns and a 6pt cage. I was planning on 10.5 inch slicks
oger Jul 11th, 02, 12:13 PM My old Super Street car weighed 3000LBS. I used a 10.5to1 408 with stock big port small valve heads a 256 266 at .050 comp cam a dual plain manifold and a 780. Very consistant 10.90s shifting at 6500rpm. The motor was absolutely streetable. With a good 427 if you can hook it up there is no reason you can't get real deep into the 10s.
bbc427 Jul 11th, 02, 01:34 PM I've got a '70 Nova with a 427 that runs low 12s but its all old-school parts. You should be able to build a engine that will et where you want and still run pump gas but if high octane gas is not an issue then use as much compression that you can. Compression makes power and it will be easier for the engine to do it. Cams with 245 to 260 degrees and mid .600" lifts should make alot of power. If you are interested I can email you my combination and go from there. Good luck with the new motor and let us know how it works out.

pdq67 Jul 11th, 02, 02:32 PM He, He!! Put a 4.25" arm in it and you won't even have to rpm the sucker to get what you want if you spec it right!! pdq67
roger69 Jul 11th, 02, 03:44 PM No mines not the fastest 427 in the world but it runs 10s at a drop of the hat.
There are a hundred ways to build a 427 and most will get you into your goals with HP to spare. Im just adding my list to give you some more combos to think about. I tend to agree to be conservitive on the heads intake ports. You dont need to go over 300 CC on a "small" 427.
