I think it's worth a look, if you are interested in a Z without the original engine or rear. Interesting question in the listing regarding the original color of the paint. I think it's more to see if it was white, which shows through in some areas. (If it's been painted, then the faded out stripes are not as telling.) Flat hood is a good sign, too.

We know from the listed VIN, it is at least a V8, since there's a "4" in the third position. (if it's a "3" in that position, it would indicate L6.) If the tranny is a Muncie, and the VIN stamp on it matches the car (ie confirming the seller's claim it is the original) then you know at least it was a Z or SS. Single fuel line would imply it was a Z or an L78. If it's single fuel line and S/B engine mounts that would imply Z.

Note, I said "imply" as anything can be changed, but with an unrestored car, it is less likely that is the case. Long ago, before these cars were so valuable, the only change most folks made to "convert" to a Z, was to install Z badges.

For the "local" price of $4500, my biggest concern would be rust.

.

All 68's have a single fuel line. Pretty sure it's 5/16 on a 6 cyl cars and 3/8 on V8 cars.

I hope this helps,
:beers:

OK, I was assuming that 68 was like 69. (you know what they say about assume!) Sorry for the bad steer.

Trim tag will not help much for a '68 with none of the original drivetrain still present. Buy it with the expectation that you will have a plain jane rust bucket to play with. He said he will take a "hot running 454" in trade for it. My buddy has the 454 out of his old Suburban that was overheating before he took it out - I wonder if that will work? :D

I think that if you bid on this car, bid as though it is a 68 Camaro that came with a V8.

Notice pass rear tire sticks out more than drvr side tire.
I'd say the car has been sitting outside looking at the rust.
