I was just wondering where everyone else mounts their ignition boxes? I want to try and keep it as cool as possible so this will affect where I want to put it.

Thanks

Dustin,

One of the mechanics who works on my car insists on putting the MSD box under the carpet on the passenger side floorboard. He puts them way up on the slanted floor under the dash. He put the box in my last Camaro, and it wasn't noticeable at all. I would think that would be about as cool a place as you would find.

My current 69 Camaro has the box under the hood(see pic).

I have the 6A box mounted on the firewall, above the airduct on the pass side. I have had this box in 3 different cars in this position for about 8 years with no problems. In my other Camaro, I have a 7AL box mounted behind the grill on the radiator support right next to the radiator opening on the pass side. I made an aluminum shield to keep the elect. connections dry.

I have mine mounted directly above the heater core box on the firewall, fits great there.

Mine is also on the firewall above the heater box - RacerX has his mounted there and I thought it looked real clean so I put mine in the same place.

On my '69 I mounted it between the grill and the battery. This way cooling air passes over it and it is somewhat isolated from the engine heat. Three years of daily driving and no problems. I honestly don't know why anybody would mount it above a header on the firewall - is there a hotter spot in the engine compartment?

HEATER box not header. The firewall doesn't seem to be any warmer than any other spot under the hood. The area above the heater box is right under the edge of the hood and seems to get fairly good airflow. Plus it's close enough to the distributor to keep short runs on the wires.

I mounted mine under the dash in the center. I think it keeps the motor compartment a little cleaner, the wiring is only exposed from the dist. to the fire wall and I can change the rev chip with out steping out of the car (put in the 3000 rpm when my brother wants to drive).

RockyMtnRacer,

I fully understand the difference between a heater box and a header. As heat is an enemy of electronics, Dustin's goal is to install his box in a cool place. Placing it in close-proximity to, behind and above a heat source (e.g. exhaust headers) won't accomplish this. There is very little air circulation at the firewall - where is the air going to go? Hot air collects in this region - especially at low speeds.
