I'm leaning towards a faulty ignition system (weak spark)....I had a similiar problem in my 68 coupe, it idled roughly and wouldn't respond when accelerated, and also was backfiring out the exhaust!.....It turned out to be a defective ballast resistor, causing a weak spark output!

Is the throttle position sensor damaged? How does the plug look on it? Thats where I would start if it only idles no matter how much the throttle blades are open on the throttle body. How about the mass air flow sensor? Does it still have the screen in it or has someone removed the screen? If the screen is gone, I would get another one with the screen and replace it. How does the plug look on it? What about the intake air temperature sensor on the elbow that goes into the throttle body? Is it hooked up correctly? How does the plug in look on it? The map sensor on the intake could also be the culprit, especially if it is cracked. More information can be found here, http://www.camaroz28.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9
good luck.
