jerrys 67 Nov 20th, 08, 03:53 PM going to chev vette fest sat. in chicago. would like to know which
col is best for my 67. have hard time getting in & out without
banging my knees on strg wheel or, should i look at seat extenders instead?
anyone have experience with either col. & which is best bang for
the money? thanks.
ls427ss Nov 20th, 08, 04:17 PM Well I bought a flaming river for my 67 and if I had to do it again, I think I would go with ididit. Coupling the steering box is easier and the turn signal plug is plug N play I believe. Go to the websites and see what the differences are. I bought mine 3 years ago and still not installed (cause I crippled the car)
tejasrs/ss Nov 20th, 08, 04:55 PM bought an Ididit for my 67 but it's still in the box...sorry.
1SLOW64 Nov 20th, 08, 05:07 PM I have had both Ididit and flaming river in my 64 chevy II. Both were tilt columns and both are the same in fit and quality IMO.
class67 Nov 20th, 08, 05:27 PM I have an Ididit tilt column in my 67 and it was a plug and play install. Sorry, no experience with the Flaming River.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Nov 20th, 08, 05:32 PM I have an IDIDIT in my 69 and its ok to me.Like i said in a previous post the only problem I have is the key come out in accessary position.
130fe Nov 21st, 08, 09:32 AM I have had an ididit column in mine for several years. No problems at all, easy to install! When I was in the market I called both comapnies. the customer service at flaming didn't seem too helpful. I then called ididit and they were over the top in answering all of my questions. I am not bashing Flaming River, I am sure they put out a good product. I just had better luck with Ididit.
Microgiant Nov 21st, 08, 11:49 AM I dont think those aftermarket columns are safe in a head on crash. Maybe get a GM part (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-Camaro-tilt-column-rebuilt-w-new-levers_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q 3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286 Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem120334445055QQitemZ120334445 055QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories )off ebay?
vintagemotion Nov 21st, 08, 01:02 PM Ididit bolts right in using original mount. flaming river does not-unless they changed it recently

That's funny. I was outbid by 5 bucks on that column:mad:. I was considering the Ididit or the flaming river column, but after researching the subject on the forums here, I went ahead & ordered one from Ricks. Good thing was they had a discount deal going on & I got it and the tilt lever for less that what I had bid for the one on ebay. I'm not sure the aftermarket columns are energy absorbing or not, but I know the original ones are. My only problem now is the column I ordered is on back order, so now I get to practice my patience!
tejasrs/ss Nov 25th, 08, 12:42 PM wow! I sold my Non-tilt GM steering column to a fellow TC'er for much, much less than that!

I'll probably sell my not tilt GM column for much less to, but getting something is better than having it sit around the garage.
jerrys 67 Nov 28th, 08, 12:11 PM thanks for the info. think i'll settle on an ididit tilt col.
JIML82 Nov 28th, 08, 07:35 PM Energy absorbing, collapsible steering columns were introduced for the 1967 model year on all GM passenger cars. All GM passenger car steering columns have been energy absorbing since that time.
I really hate to see someone removing an OEM energy absorbing steering column and replacing it with one that is rigid by design. (Particularly on a vehicle that is driven on the street.)
General Motors and Saginaw Steering Gear Division spent millions of dollars designing, testing, barrier crashing, and validating original equipment, energy absorbing, collapsible steering columns. This was so the steering column and the vehicle structure working together would provide the maximum protection for the driver in a severe frontal collision.
I have no problem replacing earlier (pre 1967) GM rigid (solid shaft steering columns) with aftermarket rigid columns from Flaming River, Ididit, etc.
My 2cents,
Jim
ZZ430DropTop67RS Nov 28th, 08, 07:43 PM I've trired Ididit, and Flaming River, the Ididit is bettter in every way.
Lobstah Nov 29th, 08, 09:02 AM My 69 has the shoulder harness...makes me think that if I hit the steering wheel...I've done something wrong ;)...but I agree with your point.
Another thread mentioned using the tilt column out of an 84 IROC...anyone else done this?

mikebrow74 Dec 1st, 08, 10:41 PM I believe Ididit just released an collapsable column for first gen Camaros. I bought my tilt 2 years ago and it went in fine and works great. Wish it had been collapsable though.
GunnerV Dec 2nd, 08, 07:32 PM Ididit has indeed just begun manufacturing collapsable tilt steering columns for our cars. For both thier universal fit and thier retro line. I just recieved the following e mail from thier sales department:
"... Actually that info has just been released to us in sales so you're one of the first I've been able to tell. They are available in bare (paintable) steel, chrome and black powder coated. I doubt our dealers are even aware of this but if you let me know what finish you're interested in I can get you a part number.

albrock Dec 12th, 08, 12:19 PM You mentioned the seat extenders, I have a set on my 68 Camaro.
It seems that I have grown considerably since I was 17. That was 37 yrs ago when I had my first Camaro. When I bought my Camaro 4 yrs ago I could hardly get behind the wheel. Found the seat extenders on E-bay, they moved the seat back 2 inches which helped. " Highly Recomend " I still needed a little more room so I installed a smaller steering wheel like the one I had back in 68. I like the old school look like we had back in the day. It's still a little tight getting in the car but once in I have plenty of room. I thought about a new tilt collum but didn't want to give up the colapsable collum, you just never know when so one might pull out in front of you.
Hope this helps

I just found out that the new Ididit collapible columns are right hand drive only. Made for the Australian market, I guess.
glide Jan 5th, 09, 01:32 PM Has anyone done a third gen column swap? For other reasons, I have been considering swapping a third gen column into my 69. Don't know how difficult it would be, would love to hear from someone who has done, or investigated this swap.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Jan 5th, 09, 05:55 PM Not to jump your post and I dont have your answer but,I have seen a new style Flaming River in Super Chevy and it has the key in the stock position of a 69.I wish they had this when I bought my IDIDIT.....
