Does anyone know what to use or where to get a stapler for the rubber shields that go from the a arms to the inner fenders?

Thanks!

If you find one let me know -- I did mine with a small drill bit and a pair of pliars -- on second thought, maybe I don't want to know since it may be a whole lot easier with the correct tool ;)

No stapler that I know of, everyone seems to be using stainless or other wire and making their own staples and installing them by hand. The staples supplied with the kits are real short and very hard to work with... This is old but covers a lot

Try our forum search using the word "staples" and you'll find a lot more.

I used a small drill bit and a pair of pliers. It took a few before I got the hang of it. The staples were long enough.

Guys .... Here's a technique that worked for me.

Clear all holes, then pre-fit / pre-bend all staples so they fit flush, and go straight though the holes.

Apply tiny dab of "super glue" to the corner bends of each staple and install all staples.

After glue sets, align rubber flap from underneath (a little tricky!) , then press staple points through rubber. (I used pliers for the piercing, not fingers!)

When happy with alignment of flap , bend over staples to finish the job.

I taped my dust shield in place with duct tape, held a piece of wood against the rubber, and ran a small drill bit through the hole and through the rubber. Then put in staples made from stainless Tig welding rod.
One complaint though: After about two years my aftermarket rubber flaps are starting to crack. Those things will be virtually impossible to replace without removing the sheet metal and old cracked dust shields will really bug me.

If I was going to install the rubbers, I would ditch the staples and use stainless button head screws, washers and nylock nuts. Think it would look way better. All that assuming it was not a full on resto.

Or original stuff. And speaking of original, the rubber repo stuff cracked?? My originals are all still perfect. That's 39.8 years.

I have changed lots of these in the last 20 years and there is no way to easily do it.
Best way I have found is 2 people. #2 person holds the shield into correct posistion, and the # 1 person drills carefully through the holes with the corresponding drill bit ( watch fingers ). #1 person Installs the staples supplied with the flap kit, and holds pressure with a heavy object ( body dolly wrapped with racers tape ) and then using a punch ( old fuel pump push rod ), person #2 carefully taps and bends the staple legs over. Repeat for all staples. It helps to start in the middle as after the first staple you can carefully straighten the flap if it appears to be crooked.
Very Time consuming but it comes out great. The stainless supplied staples are very hard to bend over. A little cursing and beer helps. IMO.

The repop stuff that I got is stamped from a flimsy rubber sheet. I asked the question at the time on the link that DjD posted above if better quality shields were available and never found any. The car only has 2,000 miles since the rebuild, it is always garaged, and there has been no harsh cleaners on the rubber. Where the shield inserts into the a-arm it is cracking.
Maybe the Velcro is the best way?

There are good repros kits out there, I have had mine on the car for years and they are holding up great. I can't imagine them ever cracking, they would have to get hard and brittle. Maybe Fred can elaborate on what he is talking about since he has 39.8 year old originals. What repros cracked on you Fred?

Ok, was just wondering where you got the info that the repro ones crack?

Edit: I saw the post where he said his repro's cracked but the thread you quoted didn't and that threw me...

Fred's pic shows the way I've always found originals to have been installed.
