After installing an aftermarket aluminum radiator I had a terrible bog when going through the gears.I went through the dizy and checked timing and advance, all good,no change.
Went through the carb and checked everthing, fine, plugs looked good as well, increased accellerator pump squirt,no change.
Changed thermostat to hi flow 195* from hi flow180*,no change.
Come to find out that the hi flow thermostats(Mr. Gasket,Sterwart Warner, etc.)flow quite a bit of coolant even when completely closed.I changed my stat to a standard type 195* and now it runs perfectly.
The Radiator was too effiecient and was over cooling causing the fuel mix to fall out of suspension when you hit the go pedal hard.
Funny how the weather(we are having record cold rite now) can affect how your engine performs...running cool is cool, running too cool is not cool.
Hopes this informs you all about the Hi-Flow stats out there.

I have a 195 performance stat from the Stewert and it does indeed flow coolant even when fully closed. That is its design. That's what those 3 holes in the center on the main portion of the stat is for. They are not meant to be run in colder weather(ask me how I know). I drive my car in all weather and was wondering why I couldn't get heat. I knew the stat flowed even when closed, but I didn't know it was enough to affect the heater performance. I could get it to heat up while idling, but when I would take off, I could feel the heater temp drop. I changed back to my standard balanced stat and all is good. The hi flow stats from Stewert are made to be used with their stage 2 small block water pumps. Their stage 2 removes the internal bypass and a small block needs the bypass so Stewert incorporated it into the stat. If you read the description about their stage 2, you will see where it says a hi flow stat is mandatory. There are differences between a hi flow and a performance stat. The hi flow has the holes drilled into it. A performance stat is balanced for better function. Most people who run a stage 2 Stewert pump do not drive their cars in cold weather. I run a Weiand aluminum hi flow pump and a Mr. Gasket performance balanced stat. I also run a BeCool aluminum rad made for a big block and my car will idle in 100* weather in traffic all day and never get above 200*(electric fan turn on temp).

Thanks Charlie..I never noticed the problem till the weather got cold.I drive my car all year around,we don't get snow here except every 5 years or so.I installed my Rad and stat during the summer.Again good info to pass on.......

Maryland doesn't seem to get snow very often either so being able to drive an awesome car like these all year is great!!!

Very interesting....I've run two high flow stats to date. My motor runs to cool as well. I ran 75 miles on Saturday in the 70's and my water temp went down to 135! I'll be changing to a regular stat asap.

Ya know it doesnt take much to throw a good mix off. I have a 3 year old radiator with a small leak. After a mth or so the radiator would be down exactly one coffee pot worth of water and start hesitating from heat soaking the carb. I know im low on water when I open my secondarys. A lil on the lean side and lots of timming and wala = sensative settings.
