I bought a 76 camaro with no engine and just bought a 350 small block to go in it. Coming off the same harness that plugs up to the alternator I have 4 heavy guage wires. 2 of these wires have small eyelets on them which I think go to the starter. 1 of the wires the end has been completly wraped in electrical tape and the other someone stripped the wire back on and made a big loop of bare wire. From what I remember I believe this wire also goes to the starter and should have a fusable link on it. Can someone tell me if I am correct with my thoughts. I have no idea where the wire goes that has been taped off. Is there 4 thick wires that go to the starter? I have my alternator and distributor wires figured out. Can someone help with the other 4 wires? Thanks

Rob. After 71 Chevy wiring made a big change to adapt to MPC (Mico Process Circuits that is transistorized). Most of us here are more familiar with the earlier circuits. I am sure there are some very knowledgeable TC members that can help you but I suggest you also post your inquiry at the NastyZ28 site were you might get a faster answer.

However a typical Chevy Engine Wiring would be as follows:

Red to Solenoid and Air Condition Switch
Purple to Solenoid
Black/Pink to Coil
Dark Blue to Oil Pressure Switch
Dark Green to Temperature Switch
Tan to Idle stop solenoid
Brown to Tach from "-" terminal of coil

Good luck man: Ron

Not sure if it helps since I hit a dead end, but...

as Ron suggests and Kev has directions to schematics,
One red wire from alt BAT terminal to solenoid post (with positive cable).
Two other red wires from solenoid post to power the car.
Positive battery cable could be of OE design and being of small wire gauge.

I would take a battery and jumper it into the electrical system to see what does and does not work on the car so when alt is installed, it won't be maxed out.
