I have just installed a pretty stout .040"over 400 in my 69 Camaro. I would like to have a rev limiter on this engine to ensure that I don't over rev it. What would be the cheapest way to do this? I know that I can use an MSD box, but I don't really want to do that. Isn't there a stand alone rev limiter available? When I used to play with old air cooled VW's, you could get a distributor cap that had a spring and a weight in it. When RPM got high enough, the centrifugal force pulled the weight toward the outside of the cap. The weight was in the circuit from the coil to the spark plug. When RPM got too high, the weight would move and shut the engine down until to got back to acceptable RPM levels. Is there anything like this for the small block Chevy?

autometer makes a tach with a built in rev limiter in it you dial it in on the face this is not cheap but if you need a tach and rev limiter it would kill two birde with one stone also msd 6al is not that much check jegs or summit for both

I bought an MSD rev limiter only from Summit for $95. It connects to any large cap GM distributor. It knocks out every other cylinder and then fires it the next time around to keep from loading up. It limits very smoothly and is only 3" X 2.5" X 1.5".

Will it work with a Mallory Unilite distributor?

The part # of the MSD Soft Touch rev limiter is 8728 and it will work with a Unilite. If you think you might step up to a CD box in the future, you should think about doing it now. The MSD 6AL box has the soft touch limiter built in and is only about $70 more than the stand alone rev limiter.

What I'm saying is that you are going to pay $95 for just a rev limiter, for another $70 or so, you can also have a CD igntion.
