I've read some posts here on bushing removal and went and got the ball joint press at Autozone but not sure how it works to remove the bushings. It's a c-clamp and the shaft is in the way. It looks like you can rip the rubber out and possibly remove it that way. The arms are old and rusty and not sure about the lip that comes off the arm if it's part of the bushing or the arm. The new bushing has a lip on it as well so I'm thinking that lip on the arm is actually part of the bushing but I don't want to start beating on it unless i know for sure what not to hit. Any help would be greatly appreciated on getting these suckers out. Thanks.

I used my $10 HFT air chisel!

Worked like a charm.

Use an air chisel to remove one side, and then remove the shaft. Beat the other side out with a hammer. To install use a socket to cover the bushing and drive them in with a hammer.

I just did the front bushings in my car as well. I bought the del-a-lum bushings and offset cross shafts. If you bought new shafts like i did, you can just cut the old shaft off with a die grinder near the old bushings and then you you can use your ball joint press to remove the bushings.

I got the rubber out and the sleeve out. Doesn't the metal with the flange come out as well, hard to tell because of rust. I don't want to hammer on it if it is not supposed to.

Yes, that's what my trusty air chisel beats out, the cans.

Does anyone have a picture of what the arm looks like without the bushing in. Is there just a hole or is there a lip. I don't have an air chisel. Is it possible to cut them out?

I hate to advocate buying cheap tools, but my $7 air chisel from HF is right up there with my $14 angle grinder. They have been beaten on MERCILESSLY and they will not die. Seriously though, get an air chisel, it is by far the easiest way to get those cans out. Just put the tip right under the lip on the can and rattle away, they'll go.

If you don't have the new bushings in hand yet make sure they come w/ new cans before you mangle the old ones getting them out. My energy suspension kit did.

Probably a little tough to see but they are the two in the back. Just a hole with a little flange (lip) toward the outside.

Thank you, a picture is always best. I think I'll pick up that cheap air chisel and have at it.

rj, I had the same exact questions that you asked about the raised lip on the upper control arm. There is a raised boss that the bushing fits into. You can't see where its seperated very easily, but the top lip of the bushing sits on top of the boss. So the raised portion that you see from the upper control arm to large side of the bushing shell is indeed part of the control arm. I got my bushing out by burning out the rubber, removing the inner sleeve beating the inside part of the bushing shell and just punching it out.
