: Best headers with angle plug heads
travis Aug 9th, 03, 07:58 AM I know this topic has been about beat to death, but I have a little twist on the header requirement...it is for my '77 nova. I need something that tucks in tight because this thing hasn't got much ground clearance anyway. Looking for a set of 1 3/4" full length headers to work with my pro-topline angle plug heads. Any suggestions?
Eric68 Aug 9th, 03, 10:02 AM What do the ProTopline angle plug heads look like? Are the plugs angled away from the exhaust ports in pairs? or are they all angled the same direction like the old GM castings?
If they are angled toward each other (like my Trick Flows) then Hedman #65003 (1-3/4" tubes, 3" collector) would fit nice IF you were driving a Camaro. They don't seem to list a 1-3/4" tube header specifically for the '77 Nova.
I'm not 100% sure what all the chassis / frame differences are between 77 Nova and 67 - 69 Camaro but I think the subframes and engine mount locations are very similar. I think the later Nova has the steering box in front of the crossmember unlike the Camaro which had it behind. That might just give you more clearance behind the crossmember although I am not sure . . .
PS. DOOOH!!! Hedman lists #65104 for the 75 - 77 Nova with 1-3/4" tubes, 3" collectors.

68rs406 Aug 9th, 03, 08:03 PM my super comps on angle plug protoplines fit great, plug acces is a piece o cake, with the exception of #3, which requires a short plug socket, but it's really not bad. they also fit tight up under my car, i'm happy. i'm sure they make 'em for your nova.
travis Aug 10th, 03, 04:42 AM Thanks for the replys guys. The heads have the plugs angled towards each other...1 and 3 point together, 5 and 7 point together, etc. #5 looks like it is going to be a bitch no matter what headers are on there. I know one thing...I sure like doing header work on a truck a whole lot better. Neither of the old mega crusty 1 5/8" headers will come out the top with the engine in place. These old headers look like pretty decent ones though...long 2 1/2" collectors and very thick walls. If it wasn't so friggin humid outside right now I would be detailing under the hood, but you can't even stand in the shade without sweat just flying off of you.
Anybody have any cheese to go with my whine? tongue.gif
travis Aug 15th, 03, 10:05 AM Eric, I hope you are right about the hedmans. I was going to order some super comps today but just couldn't justify the $250 price difference  Hedmans will be here monday.
Eric68 Aug 16th, 03, 12:31 PM I hope so too  I don't need any hate mail . . . Did you order the Nova headers or the Camaro headers?
travis Aug 16th, 03, 08:50 PM I ordered nova headers, which for the 1 3/4" is the same as '70-'81 camaro's. Of course, now I'm thinking, since I have to get the current exhaust tweaked to fit the new headers, I might as well step up to some better mufflers too  I was going to go ahead and run the current headers for a while but there is quite a bit of port mismatch with round 1 5/8" tubes versus the pro toplines rectangle shaped exhaust port.
shoddy_F-body Aug 17th, 03, 05:01 AM I have the Dynomax coated headers with Pro topline heads and its fine, except i need a short plug socket.

Who did you order the headers from, and what was the price (if I may ask). The Hedman website only lists Autozone as their local distributor. I checked with them, and they say that they can't get Hedman products. I have a friend that is looking for a set of 1-3/4's. He was considering Hookers, but the price is kind of high at $325.00 or so. The only place that I can find Hedmans listed is Jeg's for $170ish.
I will say this about the Hooker super comp's though, plug access is great (as headers go). I'm running 1-7/8" on AFR 210's, and can get to all plugs with a 5/8 box wrench. Plug wire boots aren't even close to the tubes.
travis Aug 17th, 03, 11:00 AM Kyvox, I ordered them thru our local speed shop. I do enough business there that they cut $30 off the price...I am getting them for $209. Probably a bit higher than mail order but on something like this, I like being able to just drive down the street and return them if they don't fit. They wanted $449 for regular super comps, and $523 for the coated super comps
