View Full Version : 1-3/4" Headers
Silver69Camaro Oct 4th, 02, 01:47 PM I'm trying to find some 1-3/4" headers in the 'shorty' or '3/4 length' design. Not block huggers, but the headers with the primaries around 24".
I can find them in the 1-5/8" primary, but not the 1-3/4". Any ideas on who makes them?

CamaroNOTcamero Oct 4th, 02, 04:25 PM Why do you want short, large dia. primaries?
fast Oct 4th, 02, 05:07 PM they make great low and midrange on the newer styles car
but I don't know of any for the older cars

oger Oct 4th, 02, 07:17 PM Who said an 1 3/4 inch 24 inch header makes torque in a small block?
CamaroNOTcamero Oct 4th, 02, 07:40 PM They dont, long primary, small tube headers make torque.
Silver69Camaro Oct 4th, 02, 08:36 PM I'm putting a 406 in the Camaro, and I'd like to emphasize mid to upper RPM torque. Then I can have a 20-24" long by 3" wide pipe go to the X-pipe, then 2.5 midpipes. Killer setup, believe me.
This engine will make enough torque, so I don't need any more to hurt traction.
The biggest reason is because they're easier to work with. Room, room, room. Unless if somebody knows of a good, full length 1.75" header under $400 that can give me enough room to work on the starter and such (and not heat up the solenoid).

camaroman7d Oct 5th, 02, 07:00 AM Sivler, I don't think anyone makes them. I went through the same thing about a year ago. I called all the manufactures (Hedman, Hooker, Sanderson, Dynomax, etc..) and nobody made them. The only way I could get them is to have them custom made. Custom headers are pretty darn pricey. I ended up using dirt track headers (more ground clearance that typical full length headers), but I did have to do a little welding to fit the Flowmaster collector reducers (3 1/2" - 3"). Like you said there are a few to choose from in the 1 5/8" size, but none in the 1 3/4". Good luck, please let me know if you find them. It was about a year ago when I looked so maybe somebody makes them now.

HOTROD69CAMARO Oct 5th, 02, 07:49 AM I used Hedmans 1 3/4 full length, ceramic coated on my 69 with a small block and the car has power steering. Dont get me wrong, I had to dimple them at cylinders #3 and #5 for spark plug clearence with the vortec head. And go to the shorty Accell spark plugs. Think I paid $389 from Jegs. I'm happy with them. And the 1 3/4 inch was the reccomendation that came in the info with my new motor from Chevy. Good luck.

Eric68 Oct 6th, 02, 06:33 AM I run Hedman 1-3/4 full llength headers on my 68 with p/s, s/w/p bracket setup, and auto trans. No A/C. they fit very good IMO. I cut about 3/16" off the front upper A-arm stud for #1 tube clearance (didn't want to dimple and the stud looked too long anyway). That's the only mod I needed. Good ground clearance.
68rs406 Oct 6th, 02, 07:53 PM i just put 1 3/4 hooker super comps on my 406, 68, p/s, auto, swp alt bracket, and they fit real nice once they are in, but they are a major p.i.a. to get up in there.(dr side only) only mod was a small dimple by the pitman arm, nothing major. plenty of clearance for the oil filter and access to starter is real good, not too tight, even w/ a kicked out sump o/p. over all i am real impressed by the super comps, as far as fit and quality go, definately would reccomend them.
68sixspeed Oct 7th, 02, 05:54 AM I'll second the good words on the hooker super comps, 1-3/4" with a 30" tube length, no problems doing what you want, I didn't run an 'x' pipe, but my "H" pipe is only about 6" long, so I'm sure you can 'x' it if you want. I didn't have any fit problems, but the #5 and #7 plugs can be fun to change with angle plug heads.
Sanderson makes a BB1 for Camaros and a BB3 for Chevelles and El Caminos that I think are 1 3/4" shorties. There web site doesn't seem to be real up to date but they also have these... http://www.sandersonheaders.com/pagesbypartnum/bb2.htm
