I removed the hydraulic cam & lifters from my 302 & am installing a solid lifter cam. The engine currently has Crane roller rockers that were used with the hyd. lifters. Can I use these with the solids? Whats all the talk about self aligning rockers and/or guide plates?
thanks

self aligning rockers are typically a vortec head deal, the rocker has "guides" on the contact surface at the valve stem. but, solid or hydraulic cam, standard or roller rockers, if you are dealing with factory "old style" heads and untouched pushrod guide holes (part of head casting the pushrod goes through) you don't need guide plates. the hole does the guiding. but if you start increasing cam lift and sometimes rocker ratio, the guide holes in the heads need to be hogged out to avoid the pushrod binding in the slot, which negates the guiding ability of the holes. then you need guideplates. thats the basic version of it, i'm sure if i missed any points someone will point it out. hope that helps
