: Vintage air on a Blown SBC?
SS69Cam Dec 9th, 08, 10:26 AM I recently purchased a Vintage air set up for my 69 small block, but now may be able to buy a blown 406. Trouble is, I don't want to give up my AC. I have looked around and can't seem to find any articles or pictures of a blown motor with AC. Any help here guys?
SPARKY69 Dec 9th, 08, 10:37 AM Never had a car with a blower and air..i imagine it would be fine with some mods of course.....i would go for the power 1st and sacrifice the air if there were a choice....a blown 406 is cooler then the ac blowing cool....besides you got your daily driver thats got air(camry..honda..ect.)

No arguments there. It is definitely more cool, but I have most of it installed, and it gets pretty darn hot here in Sacramento. To top it off, the car is black on black.
prostreet69camaro Dec 9th, 08, 01:05 PM Your biggest problem you will have is keeping the motor cool with a blower motor and A/C. If you underdrive the blower it will run cooler until you want more power. Then you can change pulleys and put out more boost.
SS69Cam Dec 9th, 08, 01:28 PM I am mainly confused on how the belts route. I am a picture person and most of the time need to see it to really understand.
prostreet69camaro Dec 9th, 08, 01:54 PM Are you going with a stock belt setup or serpentine belt setup. I have March pulleys on my big block but no A/C. The blower belt goes on the outside of the serpentine belts. Are you going to run roots style blower like a 6/71 or 8/71.

I was hoping to go the stock belt route- if its even possible. I know that the serpentine belt can get kind of expensive. Yes, its a 6-71 blower.
prostreet69camaro Dec 9th, 08, 02:22 PM It probably can be done but I think there is 3 belts which will limit your clearance for all the belts and fans / radiator. That is why I went the serpentine route. One belt. Good luck.

Blown69, I met you out in Swisher for their car show. Can you tell the guys what you used for a fan set up for cooling and what sort of clearance you have between pulleys and fans. Also what your engine temps. are with everything running. I see through your archives page 21 has a little description. Do you maybe have other pictures from different angles? Very nice car by the way!
Blown69RS Dec 13th, 08, 10:48 AM Marc... to answer your question on the Vintage Air bracket - I had the same stamped steel bracket that you received. I couldn't tolerate using it, so I purchased what you see in the pictures.
Brackets for the Alternator and A/C Compressor are:

Ted,
Yeah, I remember that day. Nice to hear from ya, it's been a few years now.
the radiator/fan setup is a BeCool kit.

the closest clearance point I have is approximately 5/16" of an inch. I have included a couple of new pictures to show the area. Temperatures with everything running this past summer never went much over 195..,, on average they were more in the 180-185 range.
I drove it on five different 400+ mile trips, and many hours long joyrides around the town in CR this summer and never had any temperature issues at all.
It's sitting here in the garage if you want any other specific picture angles.

prostreet69camaro Dec 13th, 08, 11:54 AM Russ,
How much boost does it put out with your pulley setup. It looks to be underdriven quite alot. My setup is about 1 to 1. The pulleys on my car are about the same size.

when it was tuned on the engine dyno, it went up to 13 lbs. boost. I haven't ever really driven it very hard.... installed, I've personally only seen it up to around 7. It's 14% underdriven currently.

I was curious because I was looking at some charts. A 383 w 6-71 blower at 15% underdriven should put out 8 pounds of boost. With my 502 w 8-71 blower at 1 to 1 should put out 8 pounds of boost and that is what I have seen on my guage.
I am assuming yours is a 6-71 blower.
