: Steering gear replacement

My car is in the body shop with the front cap off. So, I thought it would be a great time to go from manual steering to power, since everything is in the open.
I really don't know what to ask because the car is not right outside in the garage where I can check out everything. But... here goes.

I have a 1967 Camaro with manual steering and I want to change over to power steering.

I bought a used '69 steering box with the pitman arm already on the gear box.

Do I need to take the pitman arm off first, or will this slide onto the existing setup?
In case I need to take off the arm, is there a tool to take it off?

Again, I'm looking at the gear box only at this time and not the car. Is their such a thing as getting the gear box centered as far as turning right to left?

Also, is the rag joint the same on a manual vs. power? Or will I have to replace it?
I just replaced the manual not long ago. It may have 100 miles on, it if that much.

Thanks

I dont't have my books right here in front of me and I'm just starting to feel the effects coming on but I'm pretty sure you'll need all parts for power steering including rag joint, uh oh, I said joint! and pitman arm for a P/S gearbox.....You'll need the correct P/S pump brackets, front and rear, and of course, a pump, a belt, 2 P/S hoses and a partridge in a pear tree! hehehe:D:thumbsup::beers:

No, it will bolt-on fine w/ it's pitman arm on it. Just line the pitman arm straight ahead by hand and go.

And buy a rag-joint kit that has a steel screen wire reinforced rubber washer!

And watch the dam screen wire ends on the OD of the rubber washer b/c they are like needles and will GET YOU!

You will need either a 3/4" or a 13/16" LOWER half, I forget?? It's the other one from the top half!

I ground my rubber washer smooth using my bench grinder!

I don't think you will like that PS box. I hate to break the news to ya, but the '69 power steering sucked, compared to the new boxes of today. An AGR box is great and will bolt in. The Third Gen IROC box is a great swap, that will require a different rag joint and hose connector adapters. Good Luck !
