: Balancing a centerforce clutch

Has anyone ever checked the balance on a centerforce dual friction pressure plate. My engine builder put mine on a balancing wheel yesterday (without the weights on the fingers) and it had an obvious problem. When we spun it up it was vibrating like crazy. Any thoughts.

yes, i had a vibration after installing mine, it was just in a range of 1000 rpm then went away. i had it balanced at the machine shop, my machinist said he has seen several centerforce clutches that were out of balance, you would think for what they cost, they would be perfectly balanced. David

Mine seems to let it's imbalance known when letting the clutch out when not in gear. It doesn't cause a shifter vibration and knock all the time and I'm wondering if it's the transmission input shafts bearing going or the throw out bearings shaft it rides on but none the less that vibration isn't always there letting the clutch out when not in gear. Reading your posts at least I know now some more things to look at. Thanks for posting the info.

I am going to call centerforce and complain tomorrow. Mine is not that old and my engine builder says that it to far out of balance to balance. I watched it when he spun it up and the whole machine started vibrating. Makes me mad when you spend good money for a clutch/pressure plate and it is not even balanced...

How do you balance a CFII with the centrifugal weights on it? I asked a while ago and was told they can't. I did have my new Centerforce flywheel balanced. I will say it was very close out of the box.

Rick,

The weights should help with any minor imbalance. At least, that is Centerforce's story.

Right. That's why I was asking about Jeff wanting to have his balanced. It almost sounds like he may have one or more weights sticking (?).

You have to remove the weights to balance the clutch. They actually come out pretty easily. There is just a small wire that holds them in place and it can removed easily and reinstalled. I called Centerforce today and confirmed that the clutch should be balanced with the weights removed. With the weights removed my clutch rotates by it self until the heavy part is on the bottom when it was attached to the balance wheel. Centerforce is going to rebalance the pressure plate. Good for them to stand behind their products. My pressure plate is out of warranty. After seeing this thing vibrate while it was just spinning a few hundred RPMs I will never put a pressure plate on again without having it checked for balance.
