View Full Version : Oil pan gasket replacement.
danimaldds Dec 14th, 08, 08:51 AM So I have a leak with a old gasket. Enough to bother me. It's a multi-piece cork and rubber. I'm going to use a fel pro one piece. Here's my potential problem that maybe you can advise me on.... I know I need to lift the motor, but, with a tko tranny will I have enough room? Will I need to drop the tranny or at least remove the X member?? Just want more info befroe I start.. Any help? BTW SBC 350 in a 69 SS Stock oil pan

zdld17 Dec 14th, 08, 09:13 AM I have done this , with the TKO in place, its a booger. I had to remove trans to finish this job. The floor pan is just not deep enough. Hits the vent and shifter hole. Easy to remove but not so going back , working on your back with the trans in your hands. I did fab up a jig plate with a 1" pin to take the place of the floor jack cradle hole.. I attached to the lower to bolts that plate that holds the front and rear extension together.
If you had the muncie instead, it would be very easy with motor in place. Since the first time, I started using the one piece gasket and pulling motor . It could have been my deep belly oil pan.
For installation, I mated motor and TKO together and installed using a cherry picker and engine leveller. Scary but its a lot easier , especially if you are working alone. I haven't heard of anyone doing this with the TKO in place on a first gen.
Yes, you will need to remove the trans support.
You might think of all the other things you need to do , while motor is out. Cleaning, painting, other motor work, etc. Don't forget to make use of those pan gasket retainer studs that hold the gasket in place before you get the pan on. They do help if you do this with the motor in place. Good Luck.
danimaldds Dec 14th, 08, 09:21 AM Man I just got the trans in...arrggg.. I'm hoping with breaking the whole assembly loose and using the hoist with a leveler, I can just get enough clearance. So, do you think it is possible to do this by just removing both the eng mount bolts and the trans mount? or better ot just take the trans out...?thanks.. I never have anyone to help, which makes it much harder..
Everett#2390 Dec 14th, 08, 09:25 AM The oil pan can be removed/replaced with a 2X4 upright between the motor mounts and harmonic timing mark at 5 o'clock position. So let this be the judge.

Pulling the tko out and using just a picker, you probably can do this or even jacking motor up, removing fan shroud, hoses, dist, accel linkage, exhaust, clutch linkage, z bar and what ever else is attaching to body some where that may hang or hit.. Basically motor will be floating in engine bay.
Yes, you can do it this way, final answer.
Everett, with the TKO in place??
danimaldds Dec 14th, 08, 09:37 AM Everett? With a tko in place?? Why 5 oclock postion?
zdld17 Dec 14th, 08, 09:39 AM The clocking has to do with one of the crank counter weight positions that normally interfere with pan coming out.
Its a new one on me if the pan can come off or lifted high enuff with the tko in place. I have the std 4 speed tunnel , not sure what other tunnels are like.
danimaldds Dec 14th, 08, 09:42 AM Yes. I'm just going to pull the trans..

I feel your pain. I would make all effort to make sure your t/out bearing is in good shape as well as clutch disc. I check the t/out bearing and replace as well as clutch disc every time mine is apart. TKO has been out 9 times in past 4 years and I have 9 used bearings.
danimaldds Dec 14th, 08, 09:59 AM It's new. I have 100 mi on it. the whole thing is new. any other probs?

Time to go to work .
Everett#2390 Dec 14th, 08, 02:35 PM Everett? With a tko in place?? If the 2X4 can fit longwise on the engine mounts, then you will have enough room to drop/pull the pan - this is providing the trans /tunnel fit will allow you to do this effort. Remove the dist cap.Why 5 oclock postion? As said, places the counterweights in the block so the front of the pan will clear as the pan is slid in/out.
Good luck,
67CamaroRS/SS Dec 14th, 08, 05:45 PM I think what Everett is saying, before you go through the trouble of removing the tranny, try and see if a 2X4 will fit with the 4" end up. If it fits, then you are in the same situation as a normal Muncie, TH-350, etc. and removing the tranny will not be necessary. You should try the 2X4 first, you may get lucky. You may want to remove the dizzy also. Most remove just the cap, but I found you gain a little extra room by removing the dizzy. Watch all hoses and ground straps.
