: End of the world ?
RobSS1113 Dec 14th, 08, 07:55 PM Guys, Long story but Friday I picked up my sisters car to take it to the dealership to get the oil changed and a repair on the passenger side handle, well as I took off in the car I heard a rattling noise under the car. I pulled over to see what that noise was and low and behold Im dragging a heavy dutty chain from the center of the rear axle. Im dragging about a ft and 1/2 on the street. I call my sister "who was out of town thats why she asked if I could do her that favor" and asked her "Why on earth are you dragging a chain" , it was even had a Rivet hold it together!!
She told me that her husband / my brother in law believes there is gonna be an atomic bomb of some sort in the near future and the reaction or chemical shock thru the air is going to disable the cars that are not grounded .. LOL
I told my sister he is Crazy, or am I the idiot?
I got tired of driving that car and having people honk and me and tell me I was dragging a chain, so I finally just pulled over and opened the trunk of that Galant and searched for some thing to hold it up without dragging.
BTW he is a Dentist and very well educated but his beliefs are strange.
there is alot more to this but I trimmed it down.
heres a pic of the chain after I hung it up.

Rob, they work pretty good up here in the dry winter air to reduce static shock when getting in or out of the car, but I don't think it's gonna help much with a nuclear blast. If it's close enough to affect the cars electronics, ya'll will be with your maker anyway........;)
Have your BIL committed ........:D
camaroman7d Dec 14th, 08, 08:21 PM WOW!! Tell your sister to get out before it's to late. If for some reason there were an "atomic" blast the last thing you will need to worry about is your car not running.
People have some strange thoughts/beliefs. We were discussing the end of the world today (actually I was listening) and it seems that the "official" date is 12/21/2010. Believe what you want but, I don't have time to worry about it. There's not a lot you can do according to how it's "supposed" to "end" so, I might as well keep enjoying life. I refuse to drag a chain around no matter what the future holds, lol.

May I also recommend some KI (potassium iodide) to block the uptake of radioiodines by the thyroid gland. It would make a swell christmas gift- its effect however may be muted in the event of a thermonuclear blast.

I'm no ad hoc shrink... but I think he needs help... to what degree???
Both Russia and the US have been working on environmental bombs (bit of an oxymoron, eh?)...but from what Russia tested back in Sept/07...their "vacuum type" nuclear bomb...no chain dangling from the back of a car is going to save you... that's for sure.

buenymayor Dec 15th, 08, 02:01 AM I have a chain dragging from the combine to help keep static build up to a minimum, but I'm not counting on much protection from a nuclear blast. (please tell me this doesn't put me in the same league as the BIL!) After all, if we get a blast, all my corn would have turned to popcorn and there would be no need to harvest it anymore.

Mark C Dec 15th, 08, 08:32 AM The end of the world is 12/21/2012, not 2010. Its based on three (or more) ancient calendars that all end (or restart in the case of the Mayan calendar) on exactly the same day without any outside influence from one another.
The Maya calendar is a system of distinct calendars and almanacs used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and by some modern Maya communities in highland Guatemala.
These calendars can be synchronized and interlocked, their combinations giving rise to further, more extensive cycles. The essentials of the Maya calendric system are based upon a system which had been in common use throughout the region, dating back to at least the 6th century BCE. The individual calendars have a comon starting-point equivalent to August 11, 3114 BCE in the Gregorian calendar or 6 September in the Julian calendar (−3113 astronomical), and on 12/21/2012 all of the cycles realign and start over again. Is that a good or a bad thing? Guess we will find out in 1467 more days.
As far as worrying about the EMP from a nuclear warhead, what good would it do to be the only one driving (if it even would work) if the roads are clogged up with all the cars of the people that weren't quite as prepared as your BIL. He would be better off spending money on a couple of years worth of MRE's, a half dozen M16's and enough ammo to keep his neighbors at bay until they all died off from radiation poisoning, or starvation.

Your BIL showed you the true meaning of an education,,, He has the capacity to be further educated. A PhD won't get the car fixed in and of itself, but anyone with a PhD has shown the capacity to learn something. Most educated people will tell you that they know very little in the grand scheme of things. I used to put wiper blades on cars owned by doctors when I worked at Autozone years ago. They were always amazed at how easy it was. But, while I was doing that, they were in the warm (or cool) car watching me work. I liked their position better than mine. :)

While changing the flat, he accidentally kicks the hubcap that was holding all the lug nuts, sending them down the sewer drain. All the while there is a patient watching him thru the mental ward fence. “What am I going to do now?” exclaimed the man out loud. The man in the white gown, behind the fence then suggested, “Why don’t you take one lug nut off each of the other three tires and then drive to the gas station a few miles up the road and buy some new ones?” “ That’s a terrific idea! Thanks... Hey, what’s a smart guy like you doing in a place like that anyway!?” Well, exclaimed the man, “Just because I am crazy, doesn’t mean I’m stupid”… :)

Hes probably thinking.. "I still cant believe my young sister married an old man who drives around with a chain dragging under his car in case of a nuclear explosion." At least thats what id be thinking. :)
and shes my Older sister.... shes 43 and I am the youngest of 5 kids at 33yrs old.
LOL you guys are too much ... I was going to send this link to my sisters email so she can read it but I wont any more, I dont want her to fall off her chair with laughter. It took ALONG time for my dad to like that man I'll tell you guys that for a Fact, and to this day he really still doesn't like him.
He has a New ford Truck and is dragging a chain too but it is hooked up to his bumer and it is only dragging about 3 links of a chain NOT 1ft and 1/2 like my sisters car. I told him that if it snagged on something on his truck the only thing that would happen would yank the bumper off, but if My sister snagged on something she woud get hurt cause its on the axle. He told me I was right
and Yes I know my sister is very good looking .. I dont mean that in red neck way either :D. I have a picture that we took at the Mall with Santa she was sitting with my niece and she had to sit on Santas lap and she told me that Santa had his hand under her ?ss !! she was not mad just very embarrased. and it was an old man with a Real White beard almost like my B.I.L.
captcanuck68 Dec 20th, 08, 05:50 PM Rob...ya got me laughin' now with your last post! l:) I think your dad's a good judge of character.

Your sis is beautiful!.....Did she ever pose for Playboy?
RamAirDave Dec 21st, 08, 01:09 AM Took me a few minutes to reach back in the "useless knowledge" part of my memory to figure out who he reminds me of.

Hey, thats a good idea. We need to open a new section in this forum titled. "TC Hall of Fame Threads"

RobSS1113 Dec 21st, 08, 09:55 PM Ok, I hope I didn't keep you guys waiting too long I have the pic now.... I just want to tell you that I wanted to snap a pic of his truck along with it hooked up but he was outside the house when we were leaving, so I took a pic of this one ... It looked l was taking a pic of the Dog not the thing.
Hes got these 5 grounding spots all along side the driveway, A total of 5 grounding stations. He said its a 15ft steel rod hammered into the earth "ground" surrounded by a PVC pipe with cement around it, the cable that is attached to the ground piece looks like a jumper cable that was split down the middle and then cut inhalf to make 2 pieces because I saw Red and Black cables all around the driveway. Hey guys he had had his truck and the van and my sisters car attached to these cables from the chain. When I left there I told my wife that "this guy needs help" . We talked for a bit and he was showing me all the stuff hes got hooked up to the house .. a HUGE generator to power the whole house .. a reverse osmosis filter, and a hookup from the pool water to the house just in case they need to use pool water, and alot of other stuff.. Crazy I tell you, the boy is loosing it. I remember him telling me "they laughed at Noah when he was building that boat" :D
these are whats hooked up the chains on the car when they are parked at home. he said people ask if he owns Hybrids and he says "no its a family tradition" so sad im family to this but by marriage.

Any clues ?? I purchased a hand held GPS but I opened it and it is WAY to complicated for him I think, so Im gonna return it. .... I cant wait to laugh some more at you guys responses.

68Lemans blue Dec 21st, 08, 10:29 PM More Ground wire ,Sorry I couldn't resist ,more chain ,i'm bad ,keep it simple a couple shirts...Happy motoring and Merry Christmas
BA. Dec 21st, 08, 10:36 PM Ya know what? I can't knock someone for having legitimate support systems for power, water, food, shelter, etc. Good on him and anyone doing that.
Like someone already said, if he thinks an atomic bomb or something is going to go off, then that grounding wont' do sheet. He's confusing Electrical energy that sparks our plugs, lights and houses, etc, with Electrical-Magnetic pulses.
I'm curious what he thinks he's going to prevent. :)
BTW - further evidence of his not knowing electrics/electronics - he should have used a copper stake, not a steel stake!
Get him a book on what will happen during an atomic event, or how to prepare for it. :)
what he NEEDS is a vacuum-tubed, battery operated radio!!!! (to keep in touch with the world after this apocolyptic event comes that he's preparing for)
RobSS1113 Dec 21st, 08, 11:06 PM ^^^^ yes I know what you mean, it good to be prepared, BUT prepared for what is the question. He didn't start doing all of this reverse osmosis and generator stuff until he started doing all of this crazy stuff. I guess he is hard up on the grounding stuff. any links to some EMP stuff and other related things so I can fwd them to my sister for him ... please not this thread link .. lol
jackr Dec 22nd, 08, 06:39 AM Short of arc blueprints, maybe a gift certificate from here; http://www.spyworld.com/
The paranoid shop there.
edhjohnb Dec 22nd, 08, 08:02 AM I have to buy him a min. 50 dollar Christmas gift but no more than 100 bucks... i have NO CLUE what to buy this man. Any clues ??
Yes, a gift card for an electro shock therapy treatment...for him, not the vehicles.
Eke Dec 22nd, 08, 08:05 AM This would be a terribly sad thread if it were not for some of the hilarious responses . What is sad is that this guy is not alone in strange ideas about "end of world" events. I'm old enough to remember when everyone was building bomb shelters and all the schools had drills were all us students were herded in the basement where they kept water, food rations, etc... It was a strange time. It seems like he never got over those times. Even more sad is that there are "survivalists" all around us. These individuals come from all walks of life. I doubt the BIL doesn't have the ability to operate a computer or is technology challenged. He is probably convinced it's another way for "big brother" to intrude into our private lives.
The saddest thing is that this very attractive lady is married to a man who has some really strange ideas. But love is blind and loyal. I'm just glad he's not my dentist.
As far as a Christmas gift... buy him a "Gieger Counter" so he can measure the radiation levels after the big one!
captcanuck68 Dec 22nd, 08, 08:46 AM Haven't seen a thread take twists and turns like this? At times, it's comedy hour...others... serious survivalist time...then, times bordering on a soap... but it's entertaining!

RobSS1113 Dec 22nd, 08, 09:51 AM any links to some EMP stuff and other related things so I can fwd them to my sister for him
LOL .. Im quoting myself... but what I really meant here was a link to some sort of EMP compared to the crap that he thinks it will cause so he can read and find out that what he is doing as far as grounding is complete waste of time. What a Shame .. they live in a Beautiful 2 story 5 bedroom 5 bath barbie house with a lake behind the house and they have this crap laying out in the front yard. Oh Well shes the one that said "I do" so live with it I obviously cant change his mind.
DjD Dec 22nd, 08, 10:10 AM Ya know the more I read this the more I can't help wondering what satisifaction you are getting from all this Robert! Your BIL has a mental illness, maybe not something that is disabling his life but still a problem just the same. What would happen if you show this thread to your sister so she knows you have shared her life all over the internet. You are not hurting your BIL but you are sure taking steps to tear up your family with respect to your relationship with your sister.
RobSS1113 Dec 22nd, 08, 10:31 AM fine Dennis, but If my sister saw this thread im sure she would laugh your $?? off. She has a sense of humor like me. I wont say anymore on this thread or post anymore pics.. I did take down the pic of my sis and Bil but I will leave the other ones JUST IN CASE someone is looking for info on how to Ground a car maybe they can stumble onto this post and see some pics " LOL ", And comments on how to do it , or do it the correct way with copper wire.
But anyways .. thanks for the laughs .. no more comments from me .. I wont delete this thread there are too many funny comments on here.
Merry Christmas to all you guys, and Guess where we are having At??
captcanuck68 Dec 22nd, 08, 11:03 AM Rob...I admire your sense of humour. We got to be able to laugh at ouselves at times...but as Dennis said...nuff said.

SPARKY69 Dec 22nd, 08, 11:20 AM ive read every post and im freaking exhausted..............................i feel like wrapping a chain around my neck whether its grounded or not, copper or steel, stainless or coated just kill me now before the end of the world comes......
Badbird Dec 22nd, 08, 11:48 AM Robert, I'll have to agree with Dennis on this one!.....Please leave the poor man alone, it's not like he's hurting anyone!.....I think we all have some sort of a weird idiosyncrasy that doesn't need to be shared on the internet for all to see!
It's too bad you deleted the pic though because she really is pretty!
BA. Dec 22nd, 08, 09:55 PM Hey rob, finding some good links shouldn't be too hard. Just put in EMP test or EMP device, maybe "government" or "research" too. ;)
dennis, you're making some huge guesses there.....
