 In the restoration process of a 70 Camaro, I was faced with the windshield replacement. I hired a local firm to install it for me. They put too much adhesive, too for up in the hood cal vent and then pressed down on it too hard, which forced some of the adhesive up in view of the driver. They tried to scrape it out, but it ended up a big mess. If you have ever worked with windshield adhesive, you know it will end up all over the place, so I decided to let it dry before I dealt with it. In the process of removing the glass, it cracked and the paint on the hood cal vent was ruined, so I had to refinish it. I am now back to square-one.

My question is, has anyone successfully used the "3M Window Weld Ribbon" to install a windshield or back glass? I am a little hesitant about using the standard windshield adhesive and the 3M Ribbon looks like it will be less likely to cause the same problems.

James what you described is sop minus the trying to clean it up with 85% of glass shops because newer cars have a blacked out area around the perimeter of the glass which also mounts below the line of sight from the interior. Any time you have glass work done ask the installing company if they do old classic's on a regular basis and ask for photo references. The shop that finally did mine after a similar story to yours used a neoprene rubber tape as a trim edge and dam for the window adheasive. It gives a very nice trim finish...

About a week ago some one posted a good thread on installing the window, right down to how to cut the nozzle

I replaced my orginal a coupleweeks ago due to a rock...insurance cover is free glass..
The insurance company have a contract with a company Smith and Smith glass, who I believe is a subsidy of a large US chain...
They got the glass in..(Made in Sth Africa !) saw the car and then made alsorts of excuses, extra charges , time etc BS
I know when Im being BSed started to call the shots with the manager, till he admitted they doing have an installer with the skills...
Aproached local panel shop I know, also do screens, and have known for many yrs..
Gave me a quote, I rang the insurance company, told the accessor whats going on, he ranf S&S 10 mins later rang me and said let the panel shop do it

Oh as a saide note screens retail in NZ for anout 5NZ530..the S&S manager offered it to me for $300 I know it cost him $358....he could see he was going to be landed with stock , never to move..told the insurance this
S&S themn billed the insurance for 300 and the panel shop billed them for $160 to replace the old (in US dollars just over 1/2 NZ dollars)

The guy who installed made it look so damn easy...AND he knew to have the glass height at the top so the trim sits hard down on the glass, otherwise at high speed the top trim flicks off
AND that the trim in bottom cnrs needed to sit right on the glass otherwise one gets a whistle.

Hope this background helps...

PS when u guys have the car off the road, do u change your insurance policy that covers resto, and also covers accidents like breaking a screen? scatching paint?
These are covered only if preventive measures are taken eg mask off areas etc.

X2...I had a company do my windshield and rear glass, and the 1st thing I said after they got my info was ,do you have an "old guy" because I dont want some kid. Guy laughed and said yes we have an "old guy" thats stays booked out on older stuff so I had to get in line, did a great job, doesnt hurt to ask!
