View Full Version : Which motor mounts??
blackl78 Dec 16th, 08, 01:10 PM Please give me your thoughts on the best motor mounts and frame stands to run on my 67 convertible camaro. I will be running a 406 SB with a 6-speed trans. Aluminum body mount bushings, delrin control arm bushings, hotchkiss shocks and springs. Hotchkis weld in subframe connectors. Stock 69 302 stands and motor mounts??
Eric Kammerer Dec 16th, 08, 01:13 PM Which balancer are you running, 6 3/4 or 8 inch? What diameter and brand anti-roll bar?

Hi Eric, I have not chose the balancer yet, short block is sitting on the stand right now. I have decided to go with the long water pump for use of 69 up pulleys and brackets.
The sway bar is the hotchkis 1-1/8 hollow bar part# 2207F
Please explain your logic on these questions?? I hadn't took either one of these into consideration regarding motor mounts and stands.
Eric Kammerer Dec 16th, 08, 03:13 PM Some of the combos (the 302 and L48 350, as well as the 396s) used an 8 inch balancer; far as I know the frame stands that are "right" for the 302 and L48 are made to work with the bigger balancer and interlocking (also used on the HP engines) motor mounts.
Have you read the info on David Pozzi's site? Good stuff: http://www.pozziracing.com/camaro_engine.htm
The reason I asked about the anti-roll bar is the same thing. I have heard of certain combos, which, when used with the big diameter bar and big diameter balancer, cause the balancer to hit the bar.
Looking at what you want to do, the 69 model year 302/350 stands and corresponding interlocking motor mounts should be fine.
blackl78 Dec 16th, 08, 05:27 PM Where is the best place to buy the motor mounts and frame stands? Are the repop stands any good?
TJS69 Dec 16th, 08, 05:59 PM Take your pick:
302/350 frame mounts - will give you more clearance for an 8" balancer with the stock swaybar. With the Hotchkis bar is offset for clearance in that area.
You must use a small bodied HEI as you will need to modify your firewall for a large HEI to fit.
307/327 frame mounts - You might get an HEI to fit.
An 8" balancer will not fit with the stock sway bar.
A particular brand of Headers will fit depending on what stands the manufacture used as a pattern.
Hooker Headers seem to fit the 302/350 stands.
Dynomax Headers seem to fit the 307/327 stands.
We hear of a lot of problems, with the repop. stuff. I believe many parts, are mismarked at many local auto resellers. Most of these are engine mounts.
I would use the energy suspension engine mounts. You can even buy repop stands on ebay.
blackl78 Dec 16th, 08, 06:51 PM This is starting to become a little more important than I originally thought.
So my header choices will be affected by my choice of motor mount stands??
How does this effect the distributor clearance?
Unreal Dec 16th, 08, 07:31 PM I had non-interlocked NOS motor mounts with original GM stands, and everything fit great. I was a little afraid of the motor mounts, so when I redid my motor due to a wiped cam, I went with aftermarket interlocked ones. I had one NOS GM one, and I carefully measured everything, and it seemed fine. But when I dropped my motor back in, I could get one bolt in, and the other was off by less than half a bolt. I loosened one tower, got the bolt in, and tightened the tower back down. Mission accomplished....NOT.
Now I can't get the belts between the crank pulley, (also original GM) and the cross member of the subframe. I had to take the pulley off the crank to get the belts on.

Thanks Gary, So what do you think I should do for stands and mounts??
TJS69 Dec 16th, 08, 08:36 PM Travis, My advice is to use the following:
302/350 frame mounts (stands).
Energy Suspension Engine mounts
Hooker Headers
Small bodied MSD distributor (They have one that is small).
Hotchkis Sway bar - You all ready have.
Good Luck !

Thanks Tom! Are the repop frame stands OK? or do I need to be looking for GM pieces?
TJS69 Dec 16th, 08, 11:32 PM I think you will be OK with repop stands if you use the correct Energy Suspension engine mount. If you use 67,68 frame stands you will need the Energy Suspension, short and wide engine mounts. If you use the '69 frame stands, you will need the tall and narrow engine mounts.
