I was doing some surfing and found that GM has a 383 crate motor. Does anyone know much about it? It sounds like it is really setup for a truck, but I'm guessing a quick change of the camshaft and you could potentially have a beast of an engine. I noticed that it has a 3.80" stroke, so I'm guessing that it may be hard to get pistons in the future if a guy wanted to up the compression by installing dome pistons. It says that it has a 9.1:1 compression ratio, I was looking for something closer to 10:1. Anyone know if this motor has flat top pistons in it. For example, could I simply change to a head with a smaller combustion chamber to get the 10:1 ratio I would be looking for or is there something else to this engine that I shouldn't even consider it. Any info would be great...

that particular engine seems a bit over priced, and they had a lot of durability issues with it before it came out. about the only thing it has going for it is the warranty. you could build a lot stronger motor for the same money- or a lot less, actually. not sure of the price right off hand, but i know it is about as much as a 454 crate motor.

Hmmm. Decisions, decisions.

When buying a short block such as the ZZ4 or other GM item, can you proceed to bolt on the additional parts or is there prep/pre-work needed such as additional cleaning, wiping down the cylinders, etc?
