I installed a 383 with a tpi in a 1985 camaro iroc/z and the engine will not crank.I have tested a couple of things out.I have 12v to the starter big lug in off and in crank or run.I do not have 12v to the starter terminal(the small one) on an aftermarket starter in crank or run.I have jumped 12v from the battery to the small terminal on the starter and it will crank. This is a new engine and i do not want to do this for long before breaking in the engine.I am thinking my neutral safety switch or the ignition switch is causing my problem.Does this sound right or could it be something else...thank you, Scott

Check your neutral safety switch.

Either the neutral safety or the ignition switch.

There are a lot of problems regarding starting and the neutral switch!

if youre using older parts on a newer engine, or even if the parts are new, check your starter. connections, even take it to get tested.

While observing ign voltage with the ign key ON, loosen the two screws holding the switch body to the steering column and slide the body up & down noticing when voltage is gone at the top and the bottom while sliding the body. Then slide the body to the approximate middle of the stroke/slide and tighen the screws.

This action should place the body in the middle of the mating position with the tumbler sliding section. Also, make sure the neutral safety switch is positioned correctly, same method, and the clutch safety switch, if equipped.
