I have a question about the base to my air cleaner. I run a drop base air cleaner. I believe it drops 1 1/2". Does this drop interfere with the air flow into the carb? I see that Moroso makes a racing filter assembly and it uses a drop base. Right now I run a 1" spacer between the carb and the drop base to allow the airflow into the carb a direct path instead of having to climb back up the 1 1/2" drop. My question is does the drop do anything to performance? The original reason for having to run the drop base is for aftermarket carbs. Usually if you run a flat base or raised base, it interferes with the hood, but I run a Q-Jet so the drop base is not necessary per se, but if it doesn't do anything to performance, I can't see buying a new base. Thanks.

Drop base or flat base does not matter it is air the cfm of the filter ratio to horse power is what maters.I called K&N and they told me for my motor that is 500 hp I need a three inch eliment.

The type of base doesn't matter as much as the diameter of the air cleaner you're running!.....An excellent high performance air cleaner will be an open element with a 14"X3" diameter air filter!

Doug Roe has some interesting air filter flow information in his quadrajet book. check it out stock housings are pretty good.

several of the nhra/ihra stock racers, who look for every .01, will run the base or the entire assembly. the belief is it straightens the air flow out making a smoother transition. on a street car will you ever notice the difference?, nope.

Last night I was going to remove the spacer completely, but I noticed that the linkage for the secondary air valve hit the base. This was with the stock type thin paper gasket used to seal the base to the carb. I had no choice but to use a 1/2" spacer. I now have a very nice rubber gasket made by Moroso. It gives me that little extra space needed to completely remove the spacer and run just the base. I also replaced my K&N 13 1/4" x 2 7/8" filter for a K&N 14" x 3 1/16" and a K&N X-Stream filter top. This seems to have made a big difference in performance.
