I'm replacing the alternator in my z28, does anyone have any tips on how to get the serpentine belt to cooperate, can you get the belt on with an auto tensioner on a '95?

BPOS Dec 25th, 08, 05:12 PM Never looked at a 95 specifically, but on those I've seen, the auto tensioner - the part with the big spring - has an opening for a 1/2" breaker bar. Use the breaker bar to release belt tension, install the belt, then slowly ease off on the breaker bar. Done. rafbody Dec 25th, 08, 07:04 PM I didn't have any problems changing the belt on My 94. BPOS pretty much has it covered. Z28frm650 Dec 25th, 08, 10:11 PM Ok thanks, will give it a try tomorrow. JimM Dec 26th, 08, 05:41 AM They make a tool setup to get these tensioners loose. You can rent one at autozone for free. I've found that a 3/8" breaker just isn't long enough for leverage, and often, a 1/2" is just to fat to fit. The "tool" is a flat bar with a 1/2 stud sticking out, it will fit anywhere. Everett#2390 Dec 26th, 08, 07:01 AM Fit a boxend wrench to the idler shaft bolt and lift like BPOS describes. Z28frm650 Dec 26th, 08, 01:13 PM I was able to finish the job with no problems, thanks for the help with that one. Here's another one, now the engine won't turn over, I had the battery tested at autozone and said the battery was ok, so could it be the starter? all my instrument light turn on, stereo works, just makes a clicking sound when I turn the key. Everett#2390 Dec 26th, 08, 03:10 PM Dirty connections of the cables at both ends, too small of wire/cable size, or engine locked up? Or starter is toast or solenoid atop starter needs replacing or the copper bolts & plate turned. Headlights dim when starter is engaged? If they are, starter drawing alot of current, or trying too. If no dim, then might need a new solenoid, see above. Cables hot? Z28frm650 Dec 26th, 08, 06:51 PM Sometimes the obvious is the most overlooked, turned out to be a stripped battery connection bolt. Thanks for the helps folks. |
