Can someone tell me the correct pt# for the starter assy for my car and if starters were date coded? Just want to verify the starter on my car. The last time I started my car it made a high pitch whine as it turned over. Not sure if this is a sign of it going out.

Also what is meant by cast iron nose.....are there non cast iron noses?

Thanks in advance.

your starter should be an 1108418 and they are dated. an example would be: 9A12 which translates to january 12th 1969 hope this helps

The part number and date code are stamped on the armature housing; recognize that once a starter has been through a commercial rebuilder, the part number and date are pretty meaningless, although the assembly will be correct for the application. The same armature housing was used on hundreds of different part numbers of starters, and rebuilders ignore the numbers - some rebuilders grind them off these days so they don't get returns from nuts like us. :)

My original starter whined too. After a process of elimination; changed the flex plate, the engine;) and then the only piece left, the nose. End of whine.
Probably should have kept the L78.:D Still have the starter for what it's worth. Not enough testosterone. Installed a mini. Works much better.
