View Full Version : I need help: new motor, need some direction as far as trans
67speeda Dec 26th, 08, 07:50 AM Hello everyone! I hope you all had/are experiencing a happy holiday...
I own a 67 camaro that, for some dumb reason, i decided to tear apart for the second time only to run out of funds rather quickly after buying a 520hp 408 Stroker motor. After a few years (college, work, needed new truck, etc) i can finally afford to play with my old friend, the SS (clone of course, i brought it when i was 14!)
The old trans was a TH350 that i completely blew apart! cracked the case, broke the pump, etc. The converter is trashed and the TH350 (what was left) was sold years back....
As of right now i have a motor, ready to be bolted in, but without a transmission....
I would LOVE to put a manual tranny in bc i really want to avoid the track and just enjoy cruising. I think a manual tranny would be much more enjoyable to drive.
With a $2500 budget, what could i do?
Remember, i have no bell housing, clutch, driveshaft, cross member, etc
The only affordable route seems to be a built M22...
Are there any donor cars that I pull the tranny from? T56’s seem overly expensive to swap. My dream Trans is the TKO 500 or 600 but their entire kit (every single part needed) is 4K!! 2K just for tranny
Otherwise it is getting a TH400....
SPARKY69 Dec 26th, 08, 08:02 AM (get a used linco......lol ) ,build a fat th350 with some good clutches, anti balloon plates, and a trans brakes ....now that would be fun and well under 2500.00...p.s. add a 8 inch 3500 stall converter...whoa, hang on....4spd's and 5spd's are fun but the burnouts are bigger with the th350..
67speeda Dec 26th, 08, 08:11 AM Sparky69: that was the original plan....
just would perfer a manual tranny
wildwade Dec 26th, 08, 05:16 PM if you are looking for a manual trans for $2500 I have a doug nash street trans- low3.28-2.20-1.70-1.30-1to1 - with a brand new short hurst shifter. I also have a steel scatter shield, clutch, pressure plate & flywheel. the doug nash takes a turbo 400 yoke and you would have to shorten the drive shaft a little- easily done. all this for $2500 - where do you live? I'm in Iowa

400bird Dec 27th, 08, 12:46 PM But he has 520 hp and that t45 is only rated to 425 ft-lbs
Is your warranty still good with more power than your ratings?
Keisler Dec 28th, 08, 05:18 PM As long as the car is not being drag raced with dot slicks, it should be fine, and we would honor the warranty. If our salespeople are OK to sell it, the company will back it.

I bought my TKO600 from CC5 about 2 years ago and they were great and I couldn't be happier, but I gotta hand it to ya on this, that is a great price for an all up cost here,if you had this package when I bought I would have done this in a second...ah well so much for timing huh!
Flash68 Jan 5th, 09, 02:30 AM Richard @ Keisler has been EXCELLENT to work with. I had to send back mine for a different shifter location after I changed from a console to a non-console theme. The transaction was very smooth and he handles his business in a very professional and organized manner. I have heard bad stories about Keisler prior but I had nothing but good things happen to me when dealing with Richard specifically.

Flash68,
Thanks for the positive feedback.:)
Years ago, we did have 'issues' - mainly related to long lead times, backorders. This is a matter of the past now. In late 2006, we went to a Lean Production / Just In Time production system.
We quick ship nearly everything now, and require 1/3 of the customer service manpower to handle a higher volume of sales.
We are also more accessible to the public now through online forums, etc.
