I see myself as being a fairly "mechanical guy"...But what's this? (OK..I know its a rear axle but what is that "nipple thing" with the rubber cap?)

Yeppers, it's a vent tube. The top part should be loose and wiggle around, but not loose enough to pull off. Go ahead and pull it out, get after if with some brake clean or solvent and air it out with some compressed air. If the vent is clogged, it will make oil leak in places you don't want.

I could see from the dirt around the cap that oil/grease has been coming out out of there. Will clean after blasting and painting. Did not know what it was as I haven't seen it before. Thanks guys for the info. Much appreceated.
