after shifting from first to second and second to third , motor revs but car feels like it is in neutral, then it feels like tranny engages 'cause I can feel the pull forward, not a hard jerk. what do ya'll think? what other info do you think you might need for a guess as to what it could be or where i should start looking?

you didnt say anything about 4th gear so im assuming its a 3 speed auto?i would say the bands are slipping in 3rd.but im far from a tranny expert so im just guessing:)

Sure sounds like the clutch is toast to me. Got a funny smell when it does that ? Could possibly just be out of adjustment too. Is there any freeplay in the pedal or do you feel resistance as soon as you push on it ?

some preasure plates springs weaken over the years, but the clutch plate would be weathered to. sounds like. 1 pull trans, 2 put new pres. plate*Heavy duty with new clutch, 3 get on ebay and pick up a 4 speed and increase the value of your car4 times the cost of the 4 speed.
(do the bearing while you are there and check out the pivot fork for wear) good luck:yes:

Have you tried adjusting the clutch? You need roughly an inch of freeplay before the throwout bearing starts pushing in on the clutch. If, after adjustment, there is still slipping you need to replace the clutch. Do the whole assembly, not just the disc. While you have it apart, check the disc and flywheel for any oil! If there is, fix the leak or the disc won't last long.

Any particular brand of 4 speed-Muncie or Saginaw? If a Saginaw would work, let me know.
