If its a factory 4 speed car I would think it would be a great buy at 3 grand. Especially if its a numbers matching car. It has the original rims and stripping package. On ebay they are going for an average of over 5 grand.I do not think you could go wrong. Good luck, Rob

check it out in person, these years were famous for frame rot, check it carefully around the rear tires.
I remember seeing the frames gone in the early 90's

Especially if its a numbers matching car.

How can I tell if it has the original engine??? Going to look at it Wed.

The last 6 numbers of the vin or the production sequence numbers will be stamped in the engine block. The sequence number can be found on the cowl tag located on the top of the firewall under the hood. The number stamped on the engine will start with a 1 (for chevrolet) the second number should be a 1 (for the year) the third will be a letter (for the plant) followed by the last 6 numbers of the vin or sequence. On different engines GM placed this number in several different spots so it would be hard to say exactly where it would be so about all you can do is search the block. Even if its not a numbers matching car it is still a very good deal. GMJoe made a good point though, look under the back of the car and you will see the rear frame rails. They run from the tail panel to under the rear seats. Check and make sure these are solid. Good luck and let us know if you get it. Rob

Yes they are built exactly as per the unibody/front Sub frame design as the 1st Gen. The 70 models, which are more or less identical to the 81 models, had 69 1st Gen Camaro steering columns, drive train and basically the same engines in the them. The only thing is that GM designed the body of the 2nd Gen to be stronger, lower, wider with a better suspension to handle more power and speed.; in other words, the 2nd Gen body is superior to the 1st Gen. Some people prefer the looks of the 1st gen, as no denying it, it is a pretty car; but hey, the 2nd Gen is certainly not ugly. The 2nd Gen was the longest design production run GM did of the Camaro because it was, no doubt, popular and considered, by most, to be the Best Designed Body for a Muscle Car ever produced by the Big 3.

I think these cars will be the next collectables in years to come. Already over 25 years old, and who knows. Besides, I like the looks.

In 1981 you could only order a 350 4 speed in Canada, so the motor might not be numbers matching, unless it was shipped to Canada and drove back to the states (I've heard stories of people doing this).

If it had a 350 the VIN will read "1G1AP87L", if it had a 305 it will read "1G1AP87H".

If you do buy it, you should check out http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/index.php, great forum for second generation Camaros.

Good luck, it's well worth the $3,000.00.

Thanks for the info. I think I can get it for around 2,000.00. It would be worth that even if its not a numbers matching I suppose??? Any thing else I should be looking at??? Going in the morn. to look at it.

No problem, $2,000.00 is pretty good, my mom recently bought a 1978 Z28 for $2,300.00 (non-numbers matching 350 4 speed).

All I can really say is check the underneath over good, good luck!

Yep, wouldn't come off the price though. Hardly any rust, and a pretty solid car. Frame rails perfect. Seller said it has about 550hp? I don't know, but his buddies work for the nascar guys around here. They done all the machanical work thats been done to the car. Working on buffing out the paint, I think it will show decent.

Congrats, You will have a lot of fun with this car. I used to have a 79 4sd with a 350. Out of all the cars I ever had I regret selling that one the most. The only reason I sold it was the carberator would load up some times. I still am angry at myself for selling it. Guess I was young and dumb. Enjoy your new car, Rob

i assume from this tread that the 70 and 80's didn't change much???? Other than the huge drop in horsepower due to the EPA crap that started in 1970 & killed the real muscle cars.... On another note I had a VERY cool 81 Z/28 several years ago that I should have kept. Canadian car built to stay in Canada & probably should never have been here. L-82 Corvette engine, no computer & no catalytic converters and came from the factory that way.
