Anyone have experince w/replacing an m22 with an aftermarket 5 or 6 speed trans? Is there a n aftermarket trans that will just bolt in? My goal is to have the flexibility of driving to shows and long trips, coupled with the ability to get on it every once in a while. The car is a 69 camaro with a 427/425 , m21, 4:10. Any suggestions? http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Do a search on past messages in the engine and drivetrain section. There has been a lot of discussion on the subject.
I put some Richmond swap info on my First gen page. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Pozzi/richmond_transmission_swap.htm

The only two aftermarket trannies with adequate torque capacity and overdrive gearing are the Richmond 6-speed and the B-W (now Tremec) T-56 6-speed. Both are very expensive, and neither swap is easy. A search should bring up the info you're after - several here on the forum have done these swaps in the past.

The Tremec (5-speed, 0.68 overdrive)will fit into your stock bellhousing but will require a 26 spline clutch, modified TH400 crossmember, and driveshaft modifications.
If you get the Fortes "adjustable shifter" it will fit into your stock console location.
The TKO/T56/Richmond all have similar torque ratings. However, each has significantly different gear ratios.

Hey Carl I tried to email ya but it wouldn't go through. I checked out your site...nice car. How do you like your Tremec? I am really interested in one and any input you have would be appreciated! Thanks ~ John

The Tremec TKO has the torque capacity. It is rated at 525 ft-lbs. I can't remember the Richmond torque rating, but it is slightly lower than the Tremec.

Hey guys what about the Doug Nash 5 speeds?
I know that the original manufacturer is out of business but I thought that these trans & parts are still being manufactured by another source. These trans will bolt in using the factory bellhousing, clutch, & crossmember-I dont remember if the drive shaft has to be shortened or not but I do know that the shifter comes through the floor in the same spot. I am not sure about the torque rating but I am pretty certain that these are very stout transmissions!
