View Full Version : Hurst shifter issues, Muncie M20 Help!!
Larrys68Camaro Dec 29th, 08, 06:44 PM I am having a problem with my hurst Competion plus shifter.
Before disassembly I had a shifter issue but I found the shifter had come loose and the top bolt was completly out so I thought that was my problem. fast forward two years later.
I have reinstalled the shifter and cannot cycle it throught the gears.
The 3 tranny levers move forward and back and seem normal without the shifter attached. With the shifter attached the H patteren is not available I can only move the handle up/down.
Under the car I can move the short rod/lever and the handle moves
moving the other two rods does place the tranny in gear but the shifter handle doesnt move...
Is my shifter broken internally?

C-ROB Dec 29th, 08, 07:03 PM I had this exact problem about 2-3 months ago. I ended up just removing the shifter from the transmission and then chucking it up in a vise. Once in the vice, I sprayed the shifter & plates with brake-cleen and then relubricated, heavily. I used a very liberal amount of synthetic lubricant. Once all lubed up I could see that the shifter was working properly. Reinstalled the shifter and I had never felt this transmission shift sooo smoothly, or at least in a long time.
Badbird Dec 29th, 08, 07:19 PM Most likely the shifter levers are out of adjustment!.....Bolt up the shifter to the tranny and use the dowel rod method of adjustment!
Larrys68Camaro Dec 30th, 08, 05:37 AM Thanks I will try the vise clean and lube to see if my shifter will move properly

Larry,
Have you adjusted the shifter levers properly? If not, do it as your first step.
JOE58 Dec 30th, 08, 06:32 AM Pop the dust cover off the bottom of the shifter and look inside for dirt or dry grease.
It is a thin metal cover that is held in by tabs on the end and its curve acts like a spring to hold it in place.
The Hurst shifter is a great design but needs to be clean inside and have fresh grease to work properly.
Larrys68Camaro Dec 30th, 08, 09:57 AM With the shifter out of the car in a vise.
All three levers move freely
The shifter handle will not move sideways
One lever will move the shifter handle
the other two move but the handle doesnt.
I dont think cleaning will correct it but I will try.
Dowel rod adjustment I dont know what this is yet but it seems more like something that will adjust the rod length I think my problem is in the shifter itself. Ideas
JOE58 Dec 30th, 08, 10:43 AM You need to put in the 1/4 rod thru the shifter to test the neutral gate and reverse detent.
Also you need to have clearance for the 7/16 pin on the back side of the shifter when testing in the vice. It needs to pop out when going in rev pos
Rookobird Jan 1st, 09, 11:30 AM Larry,
The shifter will not move "sideways" unless all the shifter arms are lined up...hence the 1/4 inch dowel(I've used a drill bit). It is correct that only one shifter arm will move the handle. Correctly aligned, that will be the 3-4 shifter arm.
You should do the above suggested cleaning and lubing.
Then put all 3 arms to the middle of the shifter so you can put the 1/4 inch dowel through all 3 arms AND the frame of the shifter. You should see what we're talking about by looking sideways at the shifter with all 3 arms lined up in the middle. There is a small dent on both sides of the shifter frame and holes in the shifter arms...this is where the dowel goes. That "centered" position on the shifter is neutral and is the only position you can move the shifter sideways to engage the 1-2 shifter and the reverse one. At this point you could remove the dowel and try to "shift" the shifter in a vice, but it would be easy to move one of the arms and mess up the alignment. The proper way is to mount the shifter on the tranny,(it will "swivel" front to back so find the best position for your shifter handle in relation to console, front seat, hole in tunnel before final tightening) then put the dowel in place and then attach all three shifter linkage rods to the shifter and the tranny while each arm on the tranny is in neutral. You will need to adjust each linkage rod to be the proper length to passively fit between tranny and shifter arm. At this point you should be able to "shift" the gears. There are stops on the frame of the shifter which limit travel of the shifter arms. They are a bolt with a locking nut pointing inward on the shifter. Unscrew them and shift into the appropriate gear (ie. 3rd gear=back stop, 4th gear=front stop) and lightly screw bolt in to touch arm (maybe even a 64th" of space) and tighten lock nut, Make sure 4th gear stop doesn't limit 2nd gear from engaging. It should be good to go. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be clear.

Larrys68Camaro Jan 2nd, 09, 07:02 AM Thanks TC posters!!
Cleaned with brake clean used a whole can... Sprayed Tri-flow lubricantinto the shifter and it freed up. I placed it back in the can and can now access all gears including reverse.
Thanks for everyones advice
X33D80 Jan 2nd, 09, 06:46 PM It's great that you got this resolved. And thank you for coming back to close the loop.

Right!
I want to say use a 1/4" or a 5/16" drill bit and line the arms/rods up properly!
I adjust mine by leading it like this!!
pdq67's "Snoopy Art" coming!!

It only take's like a 1/2 a thread to a full thread to adjust 2nd into the H and then 3rd up and this is a real "feelie" deal here by me! And lube hell outta her too!
