View Full Version : New engine question
Camaro55 Dec 29th, 08, 09:22 PM Ive recently rebuilt my 327. I was wondering when should i change the oil and when can I safley get on it a little :). The reason i ask about the oil is ive heard people say to change the oil after so long in a newly rebuilt engine. And when can I use synthetic oil?
class67 Dec 29th, 08, 11:07 PM I personally change the oil after break-in and then at about 500 miles. Around 500-600 miles is when you could probably start to get on it a little I'd say. As far as synthetic oil....I don't think it is recommended until you have around 1,500-2,000 miles on it.
Nantooch Dec 30th, 08, 04:41 AM I changed oil right after breakin was complete then the 500 mile area then the 1200 mile area as well.. Switched over to synthetic and stomped on it as much as I wanted to. She ran cooler and was quieter then with standard oil.
SPARKY69 Dec 30th, 08, 05:04 AM Change oil after you break in the cam...then after 300-500 miles change it again ...i run 10w-40 castrol in my stock rebuilds, 20w-50 castrol in my high horse motors(500-700) ..never found a need for synthetic oil for me...if its built right she handle what you throw at it...wait till after 500 miles before you start hitting the stutter box....
TJS69 Dec 30th, 08, 08:44 AM I wouldn't use synthetic oil, until there is about 5,000 miles on it. Your gaskets and seals need to "absorb" some petroleum based oil to form a good seal. I know they put synthetic oil, in the corvettes etc, right from the factory. Maybe they use some type of additive ? I don't know.
Camaro55 Dec 30th, 08, 09:49 AM Well thanks. I guess i should probally change the oil pretty soon cause ive did the break in and ran it about 200 miles. So i should probally change it.
SPARKY69 Dec 30th, 08, 09:50 AM yes sir..oil is cheaper than repairs....cut the filter open and look in it for debris...
Camaro55 Dec 30th, 08, 09:54 AM Well what should i look for inside the filter that would mean something wrong
SPARKY69 Dec 30th, 08, 09:58 AM your looking for the color of the oil. metal shavings and so on.......
Camaro55 Dec 30th, 08, 01:59 PM Well their where no metal shaving. And the oil just looked like oil
Fred Ficarra Dec 30th, 08, 02:01 PM Enjoy!
Camaro55 Dec 30th, 08, 09:24 PM ALright thank you all.
wiskeesour Dec 30th, 08, 09:54 PM When you get on it, make sure the engine is under load. DO NOT FREE REV IT. I know its tempting, lmao, but dont free rev it. Something WiLL come loose. Try a 650 or a 700 DP while your at it. I sent you another PM.
SPARKY69 Dec 31st, 08, 05:15 AM Good to go............
NHBandit Dec 31st, 08, 06:15 AM your looking for the color of the oil. metal shavings and so on....... This post brought back an incident that had me rolling on the floor laughing a few years ago. I worked at a shop where we had a couple of dirt track racecars. I owned one and the shop owner had one. The nitwit mechanic he had working on his car cut open the oil filter (with a hacksaw) and then got all freaked out because there were metal filings in it. I pointed out to him that it was also full of paint chips the same color as the filter.... This same guy built an engine using a 327 crank with 350 pistons and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run. Compression ratio must have been around 4-1 with the pistons that far down in the hole..
SPARKY69 Dec 31st, 08, 07:00 AM thats 2 funny....
