Eric68 Oct 6th, 02, 06:26 AM Well it wasn't a pretty thing. the engine ran pretty good after no real time dialing it in, but my posi went out killing my 60' times and I think my trans burned up the direct drive clutch plates (3rd gear was real bad by the time I limped it home). Here's a pass that I made before the trans started acting up.
60' - 1.759
330' - 5.031
1/8 - 7.779
MPH - 89.09
1000' - 10.176
1/4 - 12.221
MPH - 109.99
Weather: cloudy, 85% humidity, 47 degrees, nasty 20 - 25 mph headwind.
Shift points were 5800-6000 RPM on all passes I think. My tach was acting flaky and it was hard to tell for sure so I short shifted a little (I wanted to be nice to my fresh engine). When I get the drivetrain fixed I'll be winding it up a few more RPM to find the sweet spot.
Geez, I hope things go better next time out. Trap speeds were on the low side, but the engine really felt strong - will know for sure next season.
CamaroNOTcamero Oct 6th, 02, 06:43 AM Eric,
I think your going to beat your previous best next season, looks like you can easily get those 3 tenths out of it (to beat the previous).
My suggestion is to use an EATON posi if not already, and if you think it neccesarry use 800# springs. That's what Ed uses.
69RS/SS350 Oct 6th, 02, 07:38 AM Eric, too bad about the drive train problems but the one run is pretty encouraging to me as our combos are going to be very similar as I remember. I am installing a new Eaton posi carrier and 3.73s at the same time the new motor goes in. BTW what does your car weigh? I would be extremely happy with a 12.2 right off the bat with mine, not too far from my goal of 11.99 once. What tires were you using and do you have traction/ladder bars? Please post your combo for me again. Thanks, Mike
Eric68 Oct 6th, 02, 11:31 AM Here's the whole combo,
.060 over SRP flat tops -5cc
Eagle cast crank
Eagle 5.7" SIR Rods
.036" quench height makes 11.3:1 compression
Trick Flow 23* heads mild porting 2.055 intakes
Vic Jr Intake
Speed Demon 750
Comp 294s Cam
Crane Energizer 1.6:1 rockers
Hedman 1-3/4" headers
2-1/2" Flowmaster exhaust
3.55 gears
Coan 3000 - 3500 stall.
Hoosier Quick time pros
SSM lift bars
CE adjustable drag shocks
CE subframe connectors
Runs fine on 93 octane around town, I mixed in about 5 gallons of 110 to race with.
Car weighs 3120# with a full tank and no driver - was 3375# with me, my tools and lawn chairs in the trunk http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif
It really was running pretty good before the tranny went - even with the strong headwind and cold weather.
I like the way my new Coan converter launches too. Reaction times were between .509 and .582 all night long. I think I could have won the whole shootin' match . . .
69RS/SS350 Oct 6th, 02, 05:17 PM Eric, the cam, how do you like it? That is the one I have chosen for my combo. I am using Edelbrock RPM 64cc heads, JE 11.3:1 slugs, Weiand Xcelerator single plane, Speed Demon 750DP, 1.75 Hooker SuperComps and 2.5 Flowmaster exhaust. Also 5.7 rods and CC Pro magnum 1.6 roller rockers. Car weighs 3400 with me. Think I can come close to your numbers? Oh and 3.73 Eaton posi. 4.030 bore 3.75 stroke.
joesmith69 Oct 6th, 02, 06:17 PM Eric,
Sorry to hear about the ****** luck man. When were you at the track? I was at the GM event at Stanton all day Saturday, but didn't get to stay for the Street Tire Shootout.
Anyways, I'm sure you'll get it solidly in the 11's next season. Goodluck. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Eric68 Oct 7th, 02, 03:13 AM I was there man . . . I raced in Bracket 1, 12.99 and faster. I was in each round through the quarter finals where I ran a weak 12.7 on a 12.25 dial in. Lost to that black Z-06 Corvette by .01 sec. I cut a .567 light and he cut a .749, I had him bad until I got into 3rd gear and everything went to hell.
Didn't stay for the street tire shootout either for obvious reasons. What color is your 79? I think I saw a red 79 with black Z28 stripes, was that you?
Tracy Focht Oct 7th, 02, 05:34 AM Eric, great to hear of the great motor pass, to bad on the drivetrain. So how do you like the 294s 'feel' over the older cam?

Eric68 Oct 7th, 02, 09:03 AM The new cam feels real smooth through 6000 R's. Idle is lumpy at 900 RPM in gear, but it sounds great and my power brakes still work though the pedal IS a little firmer. TQ is still great at 3000 - 3500 RPM (launch RPM for me). I should be able to get 1.6x sec 60' times easily when the posi is fixed.
There is not an obvious difference in power anywhere in the RPM band, although it did feel stronger through the traps. It was kind of hard to tell, I was mostly trying to keep the car pointed the right way at 100 mph with that nasty wind and never really took it up to 6500 R's.
I initially ran with 36* timing assuming that the engine would like more timing with the bigger cam. It did not - I backed it off a couple degrees and it ran faster.
The jury is still out on it - although I think the new combo will prove to be a couple tenths faster than the old combo when its all sorted out. It would probably go even faster with some 3.73 or 4.11 gears, but I won't give up my cruising ability.
Tracy Focht Oct 7th, 02, 11:05 AM Well Eric, sounds good. I'm sure you saw my post on how my truck ran. Was really suprised with the 28" tall tires. On motor, it ask for more stall and more gears. But if I add the 100-150 HP shot, the 28" tall tires come in about right. But so far, I love the new cam.

BigRed-L72 Oct 7th, 02, 02:01 PM Under those conditions you can be sure you`ll improve some no doubt.
What happened to the posi?
What was happening to indicate its demise?
Was the trans slipping in high-gear? what were you going over at RPM wise?
sorry for probing but, as they say: "inquiring minds need to know"! Sorry to hear you had those problems but, hey at least you know it`ll run better when it`s right.

Eric, is your car dark red/maroon? The red 2nd gen there was a '73 I believe. My car wasn't there, it hasn't been runnin since July...I hope to have it out by May 1st next year, but that may end up being optimistic. Big plans in the works, and I've only touched the tip of the ice berg in terms of parts I've bought and work I've started. Feel free to email me for more details. http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif

Eric68 Oct 8th, 02, 10:49 AM Yep, that would have been me if you are referring to the 68 with white hockey stripes.
My friend was there too who has a 69 with Z28 stripes and badging that is the same color of red, he only ran 1 pass in time trials before he blew his converter. we had the only two red 1st gens there.
Big red,
I found out the posi was going because my friend that broke the converter spotted for me afterwards. He noticed right away that my driver's side wasn't spinning at all in the water box. I got under it last night and before I pulled the posi unit I rotated one tire and the other didn't move at all! Fortunately Auburn is going to replace it for a new one for $85.
The tranny slipped the worst in 3rd gear although I noticed once before that it felt like it didn't shift into second when I slapped the shifter. It was acting weird when I shifted on several occasions throughout the afternoon. By the time I got it home there was almost no 3rd gear.
