My buddy gave me GM aluminum bellhousing. The part number appears to be 460486. It looks a little differently shaped on the lowest part of the bell than those I am used to seeing...Can I use this with a Tremec and 153 tooth flywheel behind my 327?
Thanks~

That is a truck transmission bellhousing - the center hole for the tranny should be 5 1/8" dia., larger than the one on a car transmission.
Measure the hole and the input shaft housing dia on the Tremec you have to see if they are the same or if you will need to find another housing or use a spacer to fill the gap - Tremec can advise you on if they approve of the use of the spacer or not.
That housing will fit the 12" set-up, so you're smaller 153 tooth flywheel would have room to spare ...

I'm gonna go with Vintage 68 and say what you may have is a truck bellhousing. The outside diameter of the bearing retainer for a truck bellhousing is about 5 1/8in diameter like he says, and the outside diameter of the bearing retainer for a 4sp, such as a Muncie, is about 4 5/8in. Truck bellhousings will accept a 12" clutch and have a "lip" on the bottom for a larger cover plate. A couple popular bellhousing numbers for cars are... 3858403 (10.5") and 3899621 (11") Take some dial calipers and measure the bearing retainer of yout Tremec... that may help. Aren't "free" parts fun?

Thanks for your replies. Free stuff usually rules! ~ not in this case though. :(
I don't have a Tremec yet.
It definitely looks like a truck bellhousing. Now I know. Guess I'll wait for the next swap meet!

hi,
it was just the bearing retainer needed and a new gasket, this is the part that the throwout bearing rides on, has a muncie bolt pattern for mounting and the correct outside diameter to mate with the larger center holed gm truck bellhousing pn#460486
auto gear 1-800-634-3001 ask for george
pn# 18-027-003 $42.00
pn# wt297-55 $3.40 gasket kit
