View Full Version : Garage Floor Coatings, What are you using?
Deevis69 Dec 31st, 08, 07:43 PM What are you guys using to coat your garage floor?
Here is a product I am considering:
http://www.quikretecoatings.com/epoxyGarageFloorCoat.jsp
I am a new home owner, the house has a two car garage and I'd like to coat the floor. I can't wait to get my Camaro out of a storage unit.
Thanks

JSD67-69 Dec 31st, 08, 08:49 PM U Coat. Looks great, durable and you can do it yourself.
L7869 Dec 31st, 08, 09:09 PM i have U-COAT IT also, i applied it to a new concrete floor. its been 6 years now and the thing still looks like new. the best part is you can take a rag and wipe up any spill at all in 2 seconds, with no damage or stain. its alittle pricey but worth it.
iluv69s Jan 1st, 09, 07:55 AM As far as this U-coat product, will the paint/sealant chip or crack if using a jack with a car on it??...at times I wiggle the jack around while the car is on it and/or actually roll the jack with the weight of the car on it...and how about mig welding?? will the spatter burn the surface??
Thanks Team camaro

DOUG G Jan 1st, 09, 02:04 PM I used the quikrete coating and haven't done any work yet in the garage so can't say if it'll last. I did a brake clean test...soaked a paint stick for 24 hrs. , it didn't soften :D

69-er Jan 1st, 09, 08:03 PM I can't say how good any floor coating is as I decided not to use one on my floor. I do know that at some point, something eventually will be hard/heavy/sharp enough to chip any coating when dropped.
That said, I decided to go with an absorbing type of sealer. No coating to wear or chip. It soaks down to about 1/4" or so. Simply roll it on. It's a milky-like solution.
It doesn't look as pretty as a coating type sealant or paint, but it helps keep oils from penetrating. I think I got it from Home Depot.

i use a jack on my floor all of the time. it has not chipped or craked at all. it will also never peel. U_COAT IT is not like paint. after your floor is clean you have to wet it alittle with a garden hose, then apply the first color coat, which actually gets right into the pours of the concrete and chemically bonds.
unlike paint where the floor must be dry and will chip or peel everytime.
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Jan 2nd, 09, 06:13 AM I haven't heard any prices per foot this would be my concern I would like to do this but I think it would cost to much for me.
SPARKY69 Jan 2nd, 09, 06:47 AM I have red died concrete with a sealer on top ...so far so good..
Sauron67MM Jan 2nd, 09, 08:04 AM Use a professional's source for you needs. My brother has been in business for 20 years and does simple jobs to complex, artistic floors, commercial and residential. High traffic areas such as driveways and garage floors are not a problem. Products purchased for the do it yourselfer can hardly compare to what a professional uses. You can do a portrait on the floor and work on it daily if that's what you desire. This link is but one of many sources for inspiration and products available: www.concretedecor.net
prostreet69camaro Jan 2nd, 09, 08:55 AM I won a floor coating at a car show and the guy charges $1200 to $1500 for a 2 car garage. It is a industrial coating and a 2 part expoxy mix. It has clear over it which you usually put the speckle chips on it before the clear. I did not put the speckle chips on it because if you drop a small screw or part it will be hell finding it.
It will chip if you drop something on it like a A -Arm from a table. I did that. If you weld over it , it will burn the clear. I usually put 1/8" fiber board on the floor if I have a welding job to do and Home Depot has the 4 x 8 sheets for about $7 a piece.
When it was first put it down if it got wet you would bust your butt because it was real slick.
Now that I have it I am glad I did not pay for it. It was free.

For those reasons, I'm glad I didn't go with a coating. Something that absorbs, like the U Coat It, does fine. It might not look as pretty, but if it's a "real" shop, it's hard to keep it looking nice all the time anyway. Speckles and pretty colors are only great for show floors.
JcGc Jan 2nd, 09, 12:33 PM Hey does anyone know how to remove sealer from concrete? When I bought my house the guy who owned it told me he had sealed the garage floor.
I want to put down the u coat it, but it says the floor can not be sealed with a sealer.
Thanks in advance!!!!!

my garage is 30 x 30 and the U COAT IT materials cost me $700. I did the job myself with the help of a friend
yellow69RS Jan 4th, 09, 10:57 PM Hey does anyone know how to remove sealer from concrete?
The pro I talked to told me they grind all floor with a diamond wheel before coating.
I haven't heard any prices per foot this would be my concern I would like to do this but I think it would cost to much for me.
The cheapest price I was quoted was $3 a sq ft. Makes my 1000 sq ft cost $3000. Ain't happenin:noway:

bdk68 Jan 28th, 09, 09:01 PM well I work for Rustoleum and I have installed over 500 garage floor coatings. Our products are by far the best you can put down. If in the Dallas area shoot me a email and I would be glad to help you out with a garage floor coating..

South Side Goons & Hitmen Jan 29th, 09, 01:56 AM I applied the Rustoleum on my garage floor. The concrete was three years old at the time and I put the muriatic acid on it, scrubbed & cleaned the floor & then applied the stuff. It's now 3 years & 4 months later and the stuff started to peel even in areas of the garage just under the side where the drywall meets & sees no traffic, salt, dirt, snow or ice. I hate to say it but a pile of cow dung looks better than the main areas which have peeled like crazy under our cars. None of them have leaks of any type including my wife's vehicle. It looks like poop.
I talked to a guy at Chevy/Vette fest in April of 2006 which was only 7 months after I put it down and he said that do it yourself Rustoleum is worthless. They guy installs floors & coatings & showed me before & after pics and the same issues I saw in those photos is what I have. It's now nearly 3 years later and it looks worse. I even tried to paint it with a different brand in some spots with no luck....Must not like the ice, snow, salt & road grime in Chitown.
stmeljes Jan 29th, 09, 07:35 PM I also install floor coatings (industrial) and use mostly Rustoleum products. We have a saying "grind and prime". We grind every floor by either shot blasting or Diamond grinding. We use a penetrating prime and seal, then begin our coating process. We do major plants all over the US, from beverage, food, machine (oil), and prep IS everything. You have to remove any and all sealers, if their is an oil issue, priming helps penetrate the oily areas. This process is not cheap, the material is really expensive, but if done right the looks can be awesome. I did my brother in laws garage for his 57 Chevy, and one year later it still looks like glass, and people think its wet. My garage is a flake floor system...matches the Camaro...
