I'm installing a 153 tooth (10.5") flywheel on my rebuilt 427. What starter will work?? I have rebuilt big block and small block starters and would like to return one. I'm not sure if either should work. I have the 3 bolt holes in the 427 to accomodate starters.

I would think that you would want a 11" clutch with that big block and the bigger flywheel.

I have the 153 10.5 set up already including bellhousing and have been told it will work, but the 11" would be nicer. They're using the 10.5's on the later LT1/LS1 motors. The price of the 427 rebuild killed me so I'm trying to use what I have already for the clutch ass'y .

"bolt hole" wise, all chevy starter follow the same pattern.
Big block and small block starters are interchangeable.

Straight across boltholes (1 long 1 short) = 153 tooth flywheel (10.5")
Staggered boltholes (both long) = 168 tooth flywheel (11")

Heavy Duty staters have a longer motor. Spot them by the long screw and spacer where the bottom terminal on the solenoid attaches to the power lead on the starter motor.
Standard starters the tab goes right to the solenoid, uses only a short screw.

Truck starters used iron noses. Pass cars used alluminum. Iron is better.

Be sure to use the nose brace from the front of the starter to the block.

Be sure to use OEM knurled shoulder bolts.

The 10.5" clutch will hold a healthy big block fine if it's a quality peice, and it's lighter and will rev faster

Thanks for the great info!
My big block starter sounds like it's set up for the 168T then. It actually has all 3 holes in it that all are long. Will it work on the 153T or do I need to worry about it being too far away since the dia is different?

The 350 starter I have has the 1 one long and one short mount hole config as mentioned.

heck, while I'm at it, will my 350 can/reservoir style fuel pump work on the 427 too?

The 350 starter will work with the 153.
If the BB starter has the longer motor, you could swap that onto the 350 nose.

I might be lucky here. Both starters have the same motor body length and look the same. The copper tube/spacer piece that makes the electrical connection sticks out about .600" beyond the nut to the screw/tab connection. Either they're both sb motors, or both bb motors.

The NAPA (sb) motor has a delco 1170355 7 L 15 number on it, so maybe it'll work fine.... I hope

I never really called em "SB" or "BB" but it does sound like you have 2 standard duty motors.

I'm finding that the 1107355 # comes out to be used on old (67)GTO/firebird 400 motors
