: Headers with Reverse Lock Linkage?
Rookobird Jan 3rd, 09, 10:20 AM Are any of you actually running headers and still able to keep your reverse lock linkage functional-4sp. or 5sp. car? (I'm not sure how the reverse linkage works on an auto)
Thanks,
John
PS. I wasn't sure the best forum for this question, so I put it here :)
Fred Ficarra Jan 3rd, 09, 10:30 AM You remind me of a story! It's 1969. I'm installing a set of Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers on my new Camaro. The car is on the rack of our local hang-out gas station. The torch is ready to light to cut and/or bend the new invention; a reverse lockout. It was going right through the middle of the collector. Not good. But I forgot where to make my cut. I put it back in place to recheck. It was back wards from the factory install at that moment but fit perfect. No cutting needed.
Last year I was installing my damned Hookers and found them hitting the upper rod against the firewall. I remembered the 1969 lesson. After the rod was reversed it still wouldn't clear. Hookers! Damned Hookers. I had to bend the lever. Grrrr. I hate my Hookers.
Rookobird Jan 3rd, 09, 12:51 PM So....... Does that mean you were able to get it to work by bending or customizing the lever(s)? That's what I'm hoping will work. Right now I'm installing the steering column and found the back up light switch is broken. If the reverse lock out system doesn't work at all with headers I won't bother replacing it and go with the transmission mount switch. I'd rather have the lock out linkage working. I don't have the headers yet, but I need the answer to proceed.
Thanks,
John
Gary L Jan 3rd, 09, 01:00 PM I have Thorley headers and I have modified the reverse lockout to work. "green z" on this site told me how to do it. I can send pictures. I would suggest using a repro setup so an original does not get ruined. PM me with your address. The automatic linkage does not use the reverse lockout as the manual does.
mjsmilford Jan 3rd, 09, 01:33 PM Gary L is the man, he led me to have operational lock out with my headers, pics that he sent me were very helpful :hurray:

I appreciate the aplause but green Z (Kerry Stanley, left in the picture I think), who happens to be on Jerry MacNeish's pit crew, instructed me how to do it. I was very happy and I am glad it worked for Mike!
Rookobird Jan 4th, 09, 08:53 AM Thanks for the photos, Gary, do you think the reverse lock could be made to work w/ 4 tube headers?
I will save the photos and use them when I get my headers.
John
Gary L Jan 4th, 09, 09:30 AM Others have made it work with the 4 tube type. Depends on the clearance. The higher the tubes are the tougher it will be. One picture I sent shows a flat bar bracket bolted to the motor mount to connect the clutch return spring.
Fred Ficarra Jan 4th, 09, 10:43 AM John, sorry to waste your time. I have a TH400. Oops. But I still hate my Hookers.
67CamaroRS/SS Jan 7th, 09, 08:25 AM Pardon my ignorance, but what is reverse lock linkage?

Starting in 1969, the Camaro had a locking steering column. For the manual tranny, you had to put it in reverse to lock the column. The linkage goes from the reverse lever at the tranny thru a bellcrank and then a rod to the column.
RATHOWSE Jan 7th, 09, 09:06 AM Gary, I hate to impose on you but would it be possible to get those pics posted or emailed as I am very curious to see how the linkage was made to work. thanks Al
69Z28-RS Jan 7th, 09, 11:29 AM I'd like to see the photos as well.. The reverse lockout level off the column interferes with the header tube; I thought of 'altering the tube', but I don't want to do that if it still won't work. Can you just poste the photos? :)
Thanks!
