View Full Version : 69 big block ac crank 3 groove pulley clearance problem
Shaun Cervenka Jan 3rd, 09, 08:13 PM big block 4 speed/ac car - Installed big block frame mounts, motor mounts, and trans mounts ....and motor tilts forward which in turn is leaning pulley on cross member......pulley size is 7 5/8 - 3 groove. ANY ideas why this is happening....am I missing special mounts or anything?!?!?
Shaun
TJS69 Jan 3rd, 09, 08:28 PM How about using a thinner transmission mount. Just make sure your firewall to distributor clearance is OK.
Shaun Cervenka Jan 3rd, 09, 08:55 PM thought about that, but the mount on the M-22 does not line up with the holes on the cross member, it is too far forward. even with a mount not in, the trans would have to be too far down for clearance

...........are you positive that you have the correct transmission crossmember???

Shaun Cervenka Jan 3rd, 09, 09:09 PM I have a 1969 BIG BLOCK cross member and stock mount. also tried poly mount no good .
TJS69 Jan 3rd, 09, 09:32 PM Isn't a 2 groove pulley stock ? My bad. With A/C it should be a 3937787 3 - groove - out side pulley is 7-5/8 diameter.
Did you use the '69 Big Block frame mounts with the '69 tall and narrow engine mounts ?
A picture of your crossmember would be nice. Measure form each end of your crossmember, as the transmission mounts, should be 1" to the passenger side. How did you get this crossmember ? Most parts houses don't even know the engine needs to be offset !
They very easily could have sent you a small block crossmember.
This is a Big Block crossmember. If one of the corners, of the cut out isn't a 45º... it is not for a big block.

wagonman Jan 4th, 09, 01:19 AM The picture above is a small block crossmember.
Your big block manual trans crossmember shall look just like this:

TJS69 Jan 4th, 09, 10:28 AM Whoops ! I think John is right... sorry That picture of mine was Dr'd by someone !
Shaun, What you are describing is what we here when someone tries to use a small block crossmember. A big block is slightly forward and to the right (PS) of where a small block would sit. Please measure your crossmember to be sure that the mounting holes are offset. Also make sure that the shifter holes are on the drivers side, and crossmember is not in backwards. The Pontiac crossmembers are not offset and you may have one for a Pontiac !
Unreal Jan 5th, 09, 07:48 AM There is a difference between the Camaro b/b crossmember, and the firebird crossmember, although both have the diagonal corner on the access hole. There was a post a couple of years ago which contained pics of the b/b, s/b and f-bird ones showing the differences.
I have the 3-groove pulley on my b/b with air conditioning. When I used NOS non-interlocking motor mounts along with the GM towers, I did not have clearance problems. However, when I re-installed my engine recently, I changed to interlocking mounts. I had one NOS one, and compared it to the Auto Zone aftermarket ones. After extensive careful measurement, I determined that while not identical, would directly interchange.....so I used the aftermarket. With the through bolt installed on one side, I was off by less than half a hole on the other side. I had to loosen the tower from the frame a little to get the second through bolt on, and then tighten the tower back down. My crank pulley does not hit the frame, but there's not clearance to install the belts. I have to loosen the crank pulley bolts to get the belts on. Everything is GM except the motor mounts, so that's the culprit in my case. (plus it all fit before changing the motor mounts)
Shaun Cervenka Jan 5th, 09, 07:08 PM thank you I just changed motor mounts from tall after market to tall OER it works find thanks again team camaro for your help
TJS69 Jan 5th, 09, 08:17 PM Glad to hear, you got to the bottom of this. -Tom
Z15CAM Jan 5th, 09, 09:32 PM As far as I know the grooves of the Crank Pulley are in the same position for either a 3 groove pulley or a 2 groove pulley (if you can find one) because they have to align with the grooves of the Alternator and PS Pulleys which are positioned by the mounting brackets. The AC groove is the inner one on the crank pulley. If you have problems with the pulley resting on the cross member, I believe you either have the wrong transmission or motor mount. BBC Motor mounts should offset the engine 1" towards the PSGR side.
OOP's! Sorry I didn't notice that you solved the case ;o)
