Does anyone have any idea which is the best housing to look for to narrow. Also what cars they would come in. I am planning on trying to find one at a salvage yard and would like to know what to look for and a fair price.I was told about $125 or so...Thanks in advance...

The 9" can be found in trucks as early as '63 and can also be found under older model (late 60's to early 70's) Lincoln Continentals. Chances are you won't find one under a Mustang as that was usually the first or second item to be parted out. I think the truck 9" is a better candidate as there are tons of those trucks in salvage yards.

If you're lucky enough to find an old Lincoln Versailles it'll have disc brakes already on it.

That disc brake setup is heavy. Good rearend, tho. They put the 9" in all kinds of applications all the way up to 1986. Depending on what you're doing with the car, you might wanna stay away from the early model rears as they have thinner wall housing tubes. Google 9" rearends and you'll find lots of info on 'em.

Do a little shopping before you spend money on a used housing. I am in the same boat right now, I need to get a housing pretty soon for the Nova. I built the last 9" style housing from scratch using all Currie 9+ parts (housing, tubes, ends, drain plug, vent, and used a Competition Engineering back brace). Prices on steel have gone up a bit since then and the price of the parts have made it not worth really building one like that again when I could buy a Fab housing (from Chris Alston for the same money).

Lets say you get a good used housing for $150, add $100 for new big Ford ends, add about ~$80 for a back brace (if you plan on using one), you will want to add a drain plug (none of the used housings I've see has a drain) that's another $20. Now you're at $350 + labor to grind off all the brackets and clean up the housing. For another $120 you can have a brand new stronger Fab 9 housing with ends, drain, fill, etc.. just cut to length and weld on the ends.

For me it was a no brainer because all the parts to build my housing was going to be $472 from Currie (not including a back brace), I can buy the Fab 9 for the same money and only have to worry about welding on the ends and mounts.

If you do go with a used housing see if you can find one with straight tubes not the tapered tubes. I see the housings going for about $200 on craigslist.

I used a big lincoln continental ( 74/75 ) rearend in my camaro but they were easy picking 15 years ago. It was complete with disc brakes but like stated above it is heavy. Just replaced the disc brakes on it to Baer and sold the disc setup on ebay for 300.00. I paid 100.00 dollars for the complete rearend.

Thanks Royce, every time I talk to my buddies they all say{man I just gave one away or Hey, Sam just sold one for $100} the same as when you throw something away and you need it the next day.I have a ladder bar set up and the brackets slide over the ends I guess I could cut them for a fab 9 you think.I am not sure about spending that much though as he is 14 and has about $2500 left in the bank and when its gone the money comes from dad.If I can find a housing the labor to grind the stock brackets off will be free as he will be doing it.My plan this summer to get the sheet metal done, the chassis, and get it in primer and have it rolling on cut axles.Just talking about this gets me keyed up about working on this with him,I cant wait.Royce Thanks again.

I understand about doing it on the cheap if possible. Just wouldn't want to see you end up with $400 into an old housing when you could have a new one for a few bucks more. just keep an eye on the price is all I'm saying and be sure to add up the little stuff. I would take a stock 9" housing if I could find one cheap enough. By the way the Fab 9" can be had with the ends off, so slipping the ladder bar brackets over the axle tubes isn't an issue.

Grinding the brackets off and cleaning up the housing will be good for your son.
