View Full Version : Rigging up Temporary Exhaust for Drive to Exhaust Shop!
Tim_in_NC Jan 5th, 09, 08:59 AM Hi Guys,
I need to throw some exhaust on my '68 before driving to the exhaust shop for final install ...
I would like to drive via Open Headers but the shop is just too far away ...
My plan is to mount up my 2 Dynomax Mufflers in the rear ... and then run Flexible Exhaust Piping from the collector to the mufflers ...
As for Mounting the Mufflers ... I know there are two hole locations just in from of the rear axle for the rear of the muffler to mount ... but what can I do for the front of the muffler ... I can't seem to find anything to mount the front of the muffler to (maybe I'm missing something) ...
Any ideas other than drilling through the floor pan, which I don't want to do ???
Any of you guys rigged up a Temp system for that drive to the Exhaust Shop?
Thanks!
SPARKY69 Jan 5th, 09, 09:00 AM lots of coat hangers!!!!!! drive her open headers...n.c. wont mind!!
Eric Kammerer Jan 5th, 09, 09:02 AM I just clamped turbo mufflers onto reducers, bolted them to the collectors, and called it good. Lasted fine for the 15 mile drive to the exhaust shop.
How far is too far away? I had the shop write up a written estimate and include the appointment time and left the house confident if I got stopped I wouldn't get a ticket. It sure was a blast driving around uncorked.
You can also check with the muffler shop, some have a loaner set of small mufflers with flanges attached to them so you can bolt them on to your headers for the trip.
parkbrau Jan 5th, 09, 09:29 AM Exactly! How far is too far away? especially when you get a chance to scare small children and make dog's howl for blocks around? A chance to push the envelope dont come by often. Oh well, hope you made it to the shop safe.
69Z28-RS Jan 5th, 09, 09:51 AM It's only too far if/when you get noticed by an observant law enforcement officer (with hearing).... :)
Tim_in_NC Jan 5th, 09, 10:12 AM About 25 miles or so ... several miles through the city limits ...
Mkelcy Jan 5th, 09, 11:13 AM I used something like this bolts to your collector and makes the sound tolerable: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BIG%2D50230FLT&N=700+4294923429+4294922711+4294922710+115&autoview=sku

Joe Harrison Jan 5th, 09, 11:22 AM Get a flatbed tow truck, less time, less money, less hassel from the cops etc and it's done deal.
SEK Z28 Jan 5th, 09, 11:37 AM I did the Purple Hornies thing as well. Keep them, and you can share them with other folks. Mine have circulated to many users.....
amartinson Jan 5th, 09, 11:41 AM The purple hornies above are the easiest option. Unless you have a very radical engine, even open headers can be very tollerable as long as you have some control with your right foot.
Tim_in_NC Jan 5th, 09, 12:48 PM Great Idea with the Purple Hornies ...
Thanks!
Great Idea with the Purple Hornies ...
Thanks! That's what I was talking about, see if the muffler shop has a loaner set...
lite em up Jan 6th, 09, 04:04 AM I live in Wendell and took my Nova to Henry's on Millbrook. I just loosley bolted Flowmasters on and let it ride. It was still pretty loud but I just tried to keep it down as much as possible. It was also during morning rush hour so I blended in a little more. Who are you taking it to? Henry does some great work and has 2 locations.

Easy and cheaper solution just like a flat bed/roll back tow truck might be also.

In our area the flat bed is $100 min.
jhorn Jan 8th, 09, 10:41 PM when i built my ford I drove it on open headers if the motor is not crazy it is not all that loud in the middle of traffic if you feather the gas pedal besides it is only a fix it ticket think of the fun. in ca a fix it ticket is 10 bucks.
69_OMEN_CAMARO Jan 8th, 09, 11:49 PM yea i got the same situation coming up next week, im like a mile from the freeway but its an industrial straightaway to there, then its 10 miles down the freeway, then the shop is a 4-5 blocks from the freeway exit, i think i might go for it!
gramps68 Jan 9th, 09, 12:06 AM run her uncorked!! if you get stopped, tell the cops your going to get the mufflers and if they would like to follow you to the shop, tell them you would appreciate the escort.....Like jason said, feather it....

Get a $50 auto club membership and you get 4 local tows a year. If you request a flat bed you get one but they tell you it may take longer for them to arrive. Here's the big bonus, after the 1st year you can upgrade to a gold membership for an additional $25 and the tow range gets extended to 100 miles. Every classic car owner that drives his car needs.

I know your in Ca, I lived in San Diego many years. I just got off the phone with the guy that is going to take my sons 70 Cutlass to the exhaust shop and bring it back. Little over 60 mile round trip (both of us are working Over Time so no time to go get it) it's getting a full system and theguy is going to do it for $85.00!! At that price it's not even worth wasting my paid time off to go do it and then renting the U-Haul on top of that. I was really surprised at the price.
Fred Ficarra Jan 9th, 09, 12:48 PM We used to cruise town with open headers. Not me, kids I used to police.
And this reminds me of a story.;)
It's Friday night. Town gridlocked. That's the way it was in the late 60's and 70's. Not by shoppers, by kids looking to hook-up. I even tried it once with my Camaro. I was a kid then. It didn't take long to get scared and leave. My god, somebody could hit my baby!
Then, in short order, I was a patrolman. My Camaro was safely (sorta) in our police parking lot. I was talking to a kid with an SS396. He was the driver. He had a car-full of friends. It was nearly new and the engine was running. No way that I remember why we were chatting but it was crowded next to his car. After a few minutes I bent down to look under his car. It seemed a little noisy. Yep, open headers. I got up and said "Wow! I would have never guessed. Your engine is sooooo quiet! With my Camaro, when the headers are open, no one can converse near it. Too powerful! He melted. All his buddies start to laugh. I didn't even tell him to take it home, much less write him a ticket. Poor kid. I did enough harm to his psyche:D
edit; My son and I just fired up his 496 BBC. I must have told him the above story. He wasn't going to let that happen. His headers were open. It's louder than my L88! NO WAY a word SCREAMED directly into each others ears could be heard, much less understood. Perfect!
