: Roller Rocker big blocks in 1st gens
matgo6 May 14th, 01, 02:53 PM I have a 68 and it now has a 454 in it. I have std. height valve covers and they are up against my brake booster and windshield wiper motor. I am pulling the motor and putting a roller rocker equipt 496 in it's place. This motor has tall height valve covers on it. I know I can get smaller brake boosters but what do you about the wiper motor? Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions, other than going without windshield wipers, will help.
Thanks,
Matt
oger May 14th, 01, 03:51 PM You have the wrong mounts. It should not be that close.
camcojb May 14th, 01, 04:11 PM I ran the 8" booster from Master Power Brakes. The wiper motor will clear tall covers but it's close. In fact you have to un-bolt the wiper motor to get my valve cover off. If yours doesn't clear it sounds like Oger is right; you have the wrong mounts.

matgo6 May 14th, 01, 04:27 PM How do I tell what kind I have and where can I get the right mounts if I have the wrong ones? I'm not sure of the differences in the mounts, can you explain more.
Thanks,
Matt
oger May 15th, 01, 08:54 AM there was post a while back that listed everthing for first gens. Maybe it could be reposted I didn't copy it.
Toby Keen May 15th, 01, 08:59 AM Big blocks require shorter mounts that lower the motor and move the motor ahead and to the left as you look at the car and to the right as you sit in it. They will also tilt the motor very slightly. I'm not sure if they are year specific or not. I have posted a question on exactly that, but I haven't got any responses yet.
MarkM May 15th, 01, 03:05 PM I'm running tall valve covers and I can take them on and off without removing the wiper motor. See engine pic on site.

camcojb May 15th, 01, 04:04 PM Mark,
My covers are taller than yours and I'm running a stud girdle which requires you to lift the covers straight off; you can't lift them a litle and then slide them forward to get them off.

matgo6 May 16th, 01, 08:51 PM Mark,
Does your car have power steering? It looks like I can see the box in the picture but I'm not sure. If so what headers did you find that clear the steering box without dinging them up?

camcojb May 17th, 01, 05:54 AM Matgo,
I have a big block in my 69 with p.s. I used the Hooker Super Comps (2" tube). Very close but fit without any denting. They do require the correct frame mounts though to offset the engine towards the passenger side and raise the drivers side slightly higher than the passenger side.
By the way, if your stock height covers are against the wiper motor I think you have the wrong frame mounts. And to compound the problem, most all the aftermarket ones are incorrect also. Supposedly Year One has the right ones. Ideally get some GM ones.
