View Full Version : Big Block Gardner Exhaust system
1968396 Jan 5th, 09, 12:53 PM I am thinking about installing a gardner exhaust system on my 68 camaro with a 396 big block. The only small problem I have is I am not running manifolds on my car I am running Hooker competition headers. The kit gardner sells is of course supposed to hook up to stock manifolds. I talked with Eric at Gardner and he said it can be made to fit wit a few simple modifications but before I buy the kit was just wondering if anyone here has experience with this and see how it went. Pictures would be great!!! I am also open to any other suggestions or comments on other exhaust that will work with headers but I have heard very good things about the Gardner systems. Thanks in advance,
Shane
rszmjt Jan 5th, 09, 05:08 PM Tom and Eric Gardner are the Experts on Exhuasts and are very nice people, I have purchased 4 systems off him and they where absolutely perfect. They go the extra distance and there is non better IMO.
I would ask him if it is possible to make 2 sets of front pipes 1 for headers and 1 for stock manifolds incase you ever want to go back to original. I believe they only sell complete systems so now would be the time to buy the extra front pipes.
Hope this helps. Mike.

Eric said they dont make systems for headers because there are so many types of headers. He said I would have to buy the set for the orginal manifolds and modify the front pipes myself. I have heard a lot of good things about Gardner also.

Shane I would ask him if he can supply 2 sets of front pipes and then modify by welding the collector in yourself. If not I would take the front pipes to a good muffler shop and have them copy them ( only shorter ) for the headers. That way you still have a set of original front pipes. JMO.
parkbrau Jan 6th, 09, 05:03 AM Shane, you may not find anyone with a Gardner system that did what you want to do. These are high end replicas of the original exhaust systems. If you do pull the trigger and get the system do as Mike recommends. Bolt your gardner system up and then take it to a muffler shop. Have them fit the collector and weld it.
I have a Gardner on my 350 and it sounds awesome for a simple Chevy crate motor.

I think there is a 67 Yenko on there site ( or some type of camaro) that has headers installed with there exhaust, but the pictures are not real good. Was hoping someone here had done this but maybe not. I have a mig welder so I am assuming I can weld the collector on myself. Any idea on where I can get a collector, and will this collector match the front pipes and not stand out to bad after it is welded on? I know probably a stupid question but I have very little experience with exhaust systems.

Shane, Check with some of the better local shops around town. In Calgary I have a fellow at Minute muffler who specializes in Custom Exhuast. He takes 2&1/2" pipe and somehow flares it up so it forms the collector. Most any shop can duplicate the pipes and bends if they have a sample. The collectors can be purchased through most speed shops, they are not much money. There are different ones and sizes though, you will have to tell them what manufacturer of headers you have. Maybe go on the Summit or jegs websites.
Hope this helps. Mike.
