I bought a 68 Z restored some yrs ago and never drove it...the other day i was getting it out and did some overall checks to find out:
1. the headlights do not come on , but the parking lights do. Turn signals and brake lights all work.
2. The wipers do not turn on but when you push in the switch for the washer the wiper motor starts to move only as long as you have the switch pushed in.

Before i embark on the wiring diagram and start chasing this down - id thought id get some quick input from the TC experts.

I did try another headlamp but it did not light either, but i need to say it may be bad as its an older T3 headlamp . The car currently has NOS t3's installed for what its worth.

Thanks for your thoughts

1) i would get a test light and turn the headlights on low beam, ground the test light on the neg side of the batt.and touch the probe end to the plug that plugs into the hdlght ,they are 3 terminals on the plug, low, hi and ground..one terminal will light up for lo and a different terminal will light when you test for hi beams(you have to hit the hi beam switch)...and the other one is ground that will light up if you switch the test light to the pos.side of the batt. and check the last terminal on the plug..do a visual and make sure the dimmer switch on the floor is plugged in also.. 2) make sure all your connections are good at the wiper switch ,sounds like its not on all the way or its loose..

The wiper motor is grounded through the wiper switch. If the switch is loose in the dash, the wipers will only work intermittently. If the switch is not loose, and has a good ground, the switch is probably bad.

Regarding the lack of headlights, check for loose wire connection at the high beam switch on the floorboard, if OK, then replace this switch!

Regarding the lack of wipers, check the wire connection at the back of the wiper switch, if OK, then replace this switch!

i think you are missing the serated washers on the switches, these ground the switches to the body.

Thanks for the replys.....it looks like a bad ground at the wiper motor where the copper strip is grounded to the firewall thru the stud in the grommet. Looks like someone went paint happy and painted over the strap including the piece under the grommet.

In my diagnosis i think i screwed up the wiper motor switch - so i have the motor out now getting rebuilt and will install it when i get it back. Ill confirm the final fix when that happens.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts.
