View Full Version : Rear axle oil leak
67 Swedish Convertible Jan 8th, 09, 08:01 AM Anyone know where I can order bearings and seals for my rear axle? It's leaking from the outer edge of the tube, RH side but will ofcourse change both sides. The axle is a stock 1967, 10 Bolt posi.
:beers:
big gear head Jan 8th, 09, 08:06 AM Any auto parts store should have them. All of the car 8.2, 8.5, 7.5 and 12 bolt rear ends use the same bearings and seals. The Impala used the truck bearings and seals. If they are leaking then there is a good chance that the axles are also bad, so be prepared to replace them too.

ditto x 2:hurray: look for grooves or marks on the axle ,where it goes into the seal bearing area..the shinny part towards the hub..must be nice and smooth with no deep cuts...
67 Swedish Convertible Jan 8th, 09, 09:09 AM Thanks guys, I'll look at them once removed. Do you know of any good on-line store where I can order them?
parkbrau Jan 8th, 09, 09:35 AM Go to www.autozone.com, click on the SHOPPING button and answer the prompts. when it asks you for a zip code use any US zip, such as 90278. Then get the part numbers you need. Send them to me in a PM. I'll order them and contact you on how you want to pay. Typically just a bank code and account number.
I have the rear bearings but not the seals. So i'll just order those along with yours if you want. And if you need anything else from there let me know.
I get free shipment to Germany from Autozone. This will save you some schekels. Sweden uses euro right? Or still the Krone?
big gear head Jan 8th, 09, 10:55 AM I didn
t look at your location before. It might be a little harder to find these bearings at the average auto parts store where you are. I'd get the parts from Tom's Differentials if you need axles too. He sells very good AAM axles. I think it's www.tomsdifferentials.com

Thanks heaps for all your help! Sweden still use the Krona but if needed, I'll get my bank to transfer Euro, or dollars...or any other currency you prefer. I'll check and get back.
Thanks again.

Thanks Gear Head, I'll take a look at Toms as well. Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of when removing the axels? Any springs or anything else in there or do I simply pull them out from the splines?
I really apprecieate all your help guys:thumbsup: TC is a great site :beers:
Everett#2390 Jan 9th, 09, 05:14 AM Once the rear axle cover is removed,
Remove the differential pinion shaft lockbolt,
Remove the diff pinion shaft,
Push in axle to remove C-clip,
Pull out axle.
Reassemble in reverse - beware of pinion shim(s) placement whe installing diff pinion shaft and bolt hole for the lockbolt.
The hardest step is if the lockbolt is broken.

The hardest step is if the lockbolt is broken. i never use anything bigger than a 1/4 inch rachet with a snap-on 6 point socket to remove the pinion shaft lockbolt (prevents breaking the bolt) some people use the big tools or an air gun..ouch!! good luck to you..
parkbrau Jan 9th, 09, 06:12 AM Would you recommend using the axle repair bearing package?
Everett#2390 Jan 9th, 09, 07:13 AM Which one? There is one repair kit extends the bearing/seal package further out onto the axle shaft to place the bearing on a 'new' surface.
These are okay if an occasional daily driver and people I know have had no complaints from using them. A quick fix.
parkbrau Jan 9th, 09, 07:52 AM Yep thats what I think it will do.
Hope this link works, if not its Autozone.com part # TRP1563TAV

big gear head Jan 9th, 09, 08:06 AM The repair bearings tend to leak. I've had about half of them work and the other half didn't. I quit using them.
67 Swedish Convertible Jan 9th, 09, 08:31 AM Gee guys...sounds as if you've done this before;)
And parkbrau - I think you're that close to me it might be worth driving down there to pick you up.. ha ha
:beers:
parkbrau Jan 9th, 09, 10:07 AM I dont think so...gas is still crazy expensive....just let me know if you want me to order anything. I'll be placing an Autozone order in a few days or so.
67 Swedish Convertible Jan 10th, 09, 05:41 AM Parkbrau - just sent you a PM.
