: Painting trim tag??
Wilson67 Jan 10th, 09, 10:06 AM Advice please - should I allow my resto technician to paint the trim tag same black as firewall? Or should it be kept as aluminum? Going into restoration, it has black about a inch in on each side, with middle aluminum. Technician's advice from local 'experts' is to paint tag black, but to leave VIN tag in door original aluminum.
Thanks for advice.
77thor Jan 10th, 09, 10:26 AM I believe they were painted black from the factory, so I would paint it.
tejasrs/ss Jan 10th, 09, 10:32 AM not a very clear pic but I left it the same way I found it.

The Sleeper 327 Jan 10th, 09, 10:32 AM don't think the paint really matters. I've seen most be black with some norwood cars being white
cdaubs Jan 11th, 09, 11:24 AM From what I have seen and read, the trim tag should be black and the VIN plate bright aluminium.
mccorry Jan 11th, 09, 06:02 PM Both should be black.
Sauron67MM Jan 11th, 09, 06:14 PM Just to clarify here. Wilson's origional question pertains to a 67 and one tag he is referring to is the VIN in the door. Which can't be black. Post went to 69's along the way.

I think Mccorry was talking about Norwood and Van Nuys both being black. I have seen a few Norwoods being white so I am unsure on that, but their would be no problem going black for the trim tag. Def. keep the VIN aluminum!!!!
JUST DON'T REMOVE THE TAG!!!!!
Wilson67 Jan 11th, 09, 11:14 PM Thanks for the advice. My car is from Norwood and the trim tag is partially aluminum - so that's consistent with what you've seen. As for not removing the tag - I was able to keep it from coming off a couple of weeks ago. After following discussions in this forum for a while, I know how important it is to keep the tags original.
Thanks again for quick advice
69Z28-RS Jan 12th, 09, 01:34 PM Back in the fifties, when the cars were painted, a 'quickie' mask was placed over the firewall trim tag which allowed a little paint around the edges, but mostly was left unpainted. Bye '69, I think the entire firewall, trim tag and all, were painted black. My question is: When did that process change? Were '67 trim tags masked? The original poster seemed to imply that...?
rogerh Jan 12th, 09, 01:47 PM This is my tag that I know to be original and you can see it was painted and they even put a over spray of the body color on it.

67z28 Jan 13th, 09, 06:29 AM My 67 TT has paint around the edges and no paint in the center. Maybe the paint wore off I don't know, but was wondering if it should be painted or not also.
68 Ragtop Jan 13th, 09, 10:47 AM All trim tags got painted black when the firewall was painted.
Some 67 NOR tags, like rogerh's in post #11, were painted white after that.
JohnZ Jan 14th, 09, 11:11 AM leave VIN tag in door original aluminum.
Thanks for advice.
The '67 VIN plate on the hinge pillar is stainless, not aluminum. :)

I would go with black and don't accent the letters white... If you have the white overspray (as mine did) I would add the overspray or mask it off "as is". Because you can see aluminum I would go with black and assume you never got the overspray.
