Here is a question....

What is the only dealer to have both types of ZL-1 cars?

Hechler's Chevrolet? They had two Zl-1 Camaro's delivered but I think sold neither. They did sell one of the two Zl-1 Corvettes.

My Ist take of the Drag Strip scene was the 63 Z-11 427 Impala. I don't know if it was considered a COPO like the 62's but it had lots of Aluminum body parts, even the bumpers were aluminum. It had absolutely no frills and built for one purpose "Drag Racing".

Correct.

Hechler Chevrolet is correct...the ZL-1 Camaros were delivered and then DX'd to other dealers...The 'vette was sold locally and is the Yellow car which is in FL. They also had some iron block 427 Camaros as well.

zl-1's #59 and #62.

Not to hijack the thread but will someone pm me if necessary to inform me what they know about #62 history. Ran across the eslay listing for a "mirror image, matching number, original motor, etc.," #62. Had always heard of the car growing up, but we could never get any accountability for it. Thanks in advance.

The Yellow ZL1 Corvette now resides about an hour away from me. Interesting story that I've kept up with ,belonged to a Cocaine Dealer who had it confiscated and it sold at a Gov't auction near me at Cape Canaveral, this is who got it at a steal of a price.

The 'steal' of a price was $300,000 and this was in 1991; 18 yrs ago. The story at the auction was that Roger Judski and a representative of Otis Chandler - LA Times Publisher and car collector) were bidding against one another; when the gavel went down, BOTH thought they had the high bid, but the auctioneer said Roger had it. I have heard that Chandler was VERY peeved his rep didn't buy the car! Chandler was a big$$ guy and already owned one of the two or three (a blue one which had been disputed) ZL-1 Corvettes produced, and reportedly would have paid whatever was required to own ithe yellow one. I don't know, but suspect, that Judski borrowed the money to buy it.. at least his resources were much less than Chandler's. I've heard that the yellow ZL-1 has a 'restored' ZL1 engine in it (not the original one, but the CAR is an original ZL1 for sure).

I just did a search on Otis Chandler and found out he died a couple of years ago, and a part of his collection was sold for $36Million.

An interesting AutoTrans ZL1 Corvette!
John Maher of Pennsylvania is the original owner of a '69 Corvette ZL1 with an auto trans (the only one).. and has original paperwork! (John's was used for drag racing for many year running the Gulf Oil banner)...
