View Full Version : Minimum Travel Allowance for Drive Shaft in Trans?
69RSMAN Jan 10th, 09, 06:38 PM What is the minimum amount a driveshaft can stick out of a trans without issues during driving. I thought I heard of 3/4" space between yoke/spline end and trans tail end by seal was desired.
Mine may be a tad too long for my set up (1/2"), but I'd love to use it....
Pro-Street69Camaro468 Jan 10th, 09, 06:52 PM I think I remember the guy who did my drive shaft saying 1/2"to5/8".
JimM Jan 10th, 09, 08:49 PM If that 1/2" is with full wieght on the axle, you'll be ok.
If it's with the axle hanging... :noway:
Vegas69 Jan 10th, 09, 10:24 PM Depends on the trans...TKO can be touching the dust boot.
69RSMAN Jan 11th, 09, 09:54 AM That's with the engine, trans in and sitting on all 4 tires.... I still need to add radiator, a/c components, antifreeze, alt, waterpump...so there is still some more weight to be applied.. If 1/2" is minumum, I'll monitor along the way.
GMJim Jan 11th, 09, 10:32 AM The standard amount is usually between 3/4" and 1" of travel. I use 7/8". Push the yoke in as far as possible and measure from a fixed point. Then pull the yoke out 7/8". The measurement for your drive shaft can now be made from u joint center line to u joint center line. With the TKO if you have 1/4" of machined surface showing from the dust boot extension yer good! This is with a Spicer yoke. Other yokes are not necessarily manufactured to the same dimensions and the 1/4" showing rule of thumb may not apply. The 7/8" travel allowance will suit most if not all suspension travel. Extreme lift or lower kits will need a little more attention.
Everett#2390 Jan 11th, 09, 12:39 PM Agree with both Jim's. My personal experience has been when the rear axle is dropped, as the body is supported and rear axle hangs down, I have seen an additional 1/4 inch of travel without the straps on.
You have to have the full weight of the car, not necessarliy the engine installed, in order to unstrap the the yoke and push the d/shaft forward to clear the pinion yoke for removal.
BPOS Jan 11th, 09, 01:40 PM Question: If you're about a 1/4" lacking, is OK to machine that amount from the yoke or should the driveshat be shortened? Just curious.
69RSMAN Jan 11th, 09, 02:28 PM I have a spicer yoke coming out of my Muncie attached to the driveshaft. I can pull it into the muncie all the way so it 'bottoms', pop the shaft into the rear end yoke and then pull back to seat in the rear end yoke.
Everett#2390 Jan 11th, 09, 02:36 PM Reads good to me.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, the drive shaft needs to be shortened. The output shaft will usually bottom out on the inside of the barrel before the outside trunnions hit the end of the case. It really depends on the tranny output shaft length.
69RSMAN Jan 12th, 09, 03:27 PM In my case, it bottoms out on the outside trunnion first.
GMJim Jan 12th, 09, 03:46 PM What ever is bottoming out should be 3/4" to 1" away from bottoming out with the car on the suspension from the start.
