View Full Version : A New Home For The Camaro....26x30.
67restoproj Jan 11th, 09, 08:25 AM I thought I would finally post some pics of the shop I have been building for the last 9 or so months. Its 26x30 with 10ft ceilings and a 15x30 loft or games room. With the Camaro and my sons truck (both projects)we needed the extra room(and a place to hide:yes:).
Its a work in progress, but getting there. So, if your in the area stop by....oh,and bring your hammer.:beers:

Thanks for nice comments guys. Doing the work myself to save money.....ive got a Camaro to build:)
I dont have any experience in carpentry (its still standing) but im learning lots. The electrical is next up, so Ive got lots of reading to do...
clwilcox33 Jan 12th, 09, 08:53 AM Very nice Pat!! Same reason I built mine myself, gotta save cash for the Camaro! Wish I could have built mine tall enough for a second floor but zoning in my area prevented it.

c'mon man, its a 67.......what site is this again?:) just kiddin......had to give you a hard time:) thanks for the nice compliment!! Sweet 69 by the way!!
82Vettrin Jan 19th, 09, 02:15 PM very, very nice.. well-constructed.
give the electrical much thought; mine has only been finished 1 yr and a couple'a months and I already run-into places where plugs-ins are and don't need to be, and sadly, vice-versa.
also, take tons of digital pics and store them on discs for reference.
in the future, when locating something heavy on the walls, remodeling,, the pics will give concise reference as-to where the studs, electrical and plumbing are.
it appears you're doing a great job.
puff puff Jan 21st, 09, 04:46 PM Just curious, where/how do you find out what your particular zoning rules are?

I went to our municipal building dept. They give you outlines for everything from your property set backs to height restrictions......thats if your going with a building permit.
TraxUnderground Jan 21st, 09, 07:08 PM Super nice Pat...great work. You have lots of room in there...enough for my 67 too ? I'll help ya carry the pootable and bar upstairs :)....seriously, nice garage...I'm jealous

Precisely what I did. Since I'm in city limits, we had to follow the city's building codes. I just went to the City's Building Inspector's office and they gave me print outs of all the rules as mentioned above. In my area, the "detached garage" had to be at least 3 feet from the rear property line, and at least 6 feet from the home. Anything under 500 sq. ft. could only be 15 ft tall. I could have gone over 500 sq. ft. and had a 25 ft. height limit to play with, but if I went over 500, then the garage would have had to have the exact exterior of the home on the property, which meant to me, that I would have had to brick the entire structure. That's not something I wanted to even attempt. Keeping it under 500 (Mine's 480), I could just use siding. I used concrete fiber siding (Hardi).
In the country, a lot of these rules don't apply, and in a lot of places you don't even need a permit. You'll need to check w/ your local building inspector just in case, because if it's required and you don't get one, it's heavy fines. They can even go as far as wanting the new structure removed if it doesn't meet building codes.
I had to have I think 4 inspections of my garage during it's build. Foundation, Frame, Electrical, and Final. Yours may vary depending on what you do to it, like if you add plumbing to it, that might be another inspection. I was the most nervous about the Electrical Insp. as I did all the wiring myself, following code and advice from electrician friends of mine, and advice of my friends in the business right here on TC!!
Did I just ramble again?? :D

The shop is set back 6ft from the property line. Minimum is 5ft. If you look at my neighbors house (see pic) you will know why I went with a permit. Funny.....I didnt receive a christmas card this year.

okiemark Jan 22nd, 09, 08:02 PM it would be nice to have land to do that on! You can't beat Southern Cal for the weather but I don't know too many people with room to build anything like these garages. (thanks, I keep that '69 in my tiny garage.)
